What Are the Best AI Agents for SEO Workflows?

AI agents for SEO compared on write access, data source and evidence: nine agent services, MCP servers and coding agents, led by Canlah AI on audit trail.

A grid of dark tiles on a slate panel, one tile glowing indigo

Quick answer

Canlah AI ranks first among the nine AI agents for SEO in this comparison, for teams that need agent-run work with an audit trail: six named agents across measurement and delivery, human sign-off before anything ships and a raw probe archive the client keeps. Search Atlas OTTO SEO leads for autonomous on-site deployment from $79 a month, and Claude Code is the strongest base for building your own SEO agent at $17 a month on annual Pro billing. DataForSEO MCP (data behind any assistant), Ahrefs SEO MCP (existing Ahrefs plans), SE Ranking MCP (180-plus tools on one connection), Semrush MCP (Semrush One accounts), Writesonic (content-led workflows) and Nightwatch NightOwl (rank-led automation) cover the other cases.

An AI agent for SEO takes a goal, decides which tools to call, calls them and then produces or deploys a change, instead of returning a recommendation for a human to action. The nine entries come in three shapes: a managed agent team, a self-serve agent with write access to your site and an MCP server that hands live SEO data to a general coding agent.

Published monthly prices for the eight third-party entries on September 23, 2026 ran from $17 for Claude Code on annual Pro billing to $999 for the Search Atlas Agency tier, depending on whether you buy a data connection, a self-serve agent or a managed team, how many projects it covers and how much metered usage each run consumes. Canlah AI prices its managed GEO service per AI platform: Starter from $1,500 a month (ChatGPT, 4 buyer questions), Growth from $3,000 a month (adds Google AI Overviews, 8 buyer questions) and Full customised. It offers a free AI visibility report within 48 hours, and DeepAudit at $99 for One read or $189 for Month read; the fee can be credited toward the agency service (not toward Canlah All-Stars).

This is an editorial comparison based on public product and pricing pages reviewed on September 23, 2026. It is not a controlled test of agent output.

Disclosure: Canlah AI publishes this guide and places its own service first. Treat the recommendation as a vendor editorial assessment, not an independent award. Competitor descriptions come from public product pages and were not verified through paid accounts or private demonstrations.

What is an AI agent for SEO?

An AI agent for SEO is software that plans an SEO task, calls tools on its own and returns or deploys the result, and the nine entries in this comparison do that in one of three shapes. A managed service runs the loop inside a vendor’s pipeline. A self-serve platform runs it in a dashboard and can write to your live site. An MCP server does not act on its own: it exposes SEO data as tools so a general agent such as Claude Code can act.

Canlah AI’s Skills Radar, re-read on August 23, 2026, shows how uneven the connector layer is:

  • Indexed: 434 marketing MCP skills, 30 of them verified through a live tools/list handshake.
  • SEO share: 77 of the 434 sit in the search and SEO capability board, the largest single category.
  • Decay: 4 of the 30 verified skills were stale, archived or returning a 404 when their repositories were re-read.

That decay figure is the practical warning. Much of what is sold as an SEO agent is a wrapper around a data source, and the wrapper decays faster than the data. Compare two questions: “Does your agent automate technical SEO?” versus “Which file did it change, and who approved the change?”. Every product below answers the first. The second separates them.

What an AI SEO agent should be graded on

Three properties decide whether an SEO agent is safe to put into a workflow: what it can write to, which data it sees and what evidence it leaves. Feature lists settle none of the three.

Write access and rollback. An agent that injects tags into live pages through a pixel or DNS proxy is a deployment system, and needs an approval mode, a change log and a rollback path. Ask where the change lives after you cancel.

Data source. A coding agent with no SEO data connected will invent search volumes. An MCP server fixes that by putting a real index behind the prompt, which is why the server matters more than the model here. Ask which API each tool call maps to and what a call costs.

Evidence retention. Agent runs are non-deterministic, so the same prompt can produce a different plan twice. Without the stored prompt, answer and timestamp, month six cannot be compared with month one under one protocol. Canlah AI reports its own measurement as ranges for that reason, not as a single score.

A fourth check sits beside these: language and market. DeepSeek, Qwen and Doubao were not found on the reviewed pages of any of the eight third-party entries below.

How we evaluated these AI SEO agents

We scored each of the nine entries on five criteria: write access and rollback, data source, evidence retention, engine coverage and cost of entry. Write access and evidence retention were weighted most heavily, since those two decide what happens when an agent is wrong. Raw feature count carried no weight.

An agent that touches three things and logs all three scored above one that automates more and logs less. Where a capability could not be confirmed from public materials, it is marked rather than guessed. Candidate discovery drew on search results for “ai agents for seo”, “seo ai agent” and “mcp for seo”. Surfer SEO, Frase and Screaming Frog were reviewed but not ranked: their pages describe assisted tooling, not an agent that acts without a human step.

Nine AI agents for SEO compared

Three of the nine AI agents for SEO in this comparison can change a site or repository (Canlah AI, Search Atlas OTTO SEO and Claude Code), four are MCP data servers and two produce drafts or recommendations.

Comparison of nine AI agents for SEO, public product and pricing pages reviewed September 23, 2026.

# Tool Best for Shape What it can write to Entry price Main point to verify
1 Canlah AI Agent-run work with an audit trail Managed team of six named agents Site, content and off-site assets, after human sign-off GEO service from $1,500 a month per AI platform; free AI visibility report within 48 hours; DeepAudit from $99 Dated sample record and named sign-off
2 Search Atlas OTTO SEO Autonomous on-site deployment Self-serve agent platform Live site via OTTO Pixel, Cloudflare DNS, CMS or code pipeline $79/month Starter, $159 Growth, $319 Pro, $999 Agency Page change log with the pixel removed
3 Claude Code Building your own SEO agent General coding agent with MCP and Skills Your repository and any connected MCP server $17/month on annual Pro billing, Max from $100 Connected data server and branch review
4 DataForSEO MCP Raw SEO data behind any assistant MCP server, eight DataForSEO APIs Write tools not found on reviewed page Pay-as-you-go API credit Per-call cost and client tool limit
5 Ahrefs SEO MCP Teams already paying for Ahrefs MCP server, 100 to unlimited rows per request Write tools not found on reviewed page Included on Lite, Standard, Advanced, Enterprise Rows-per-request ceiling on your tier
6 SE Ranking MCP Tool breadth on one connection MCP server, 180-plus SEO and GEO tools Write tools not found on reviewed page Included in every plan; API from $50 per 250K credits Credit cost of your most-used tools
7 Semrush MCP Existing Semrush One accounts MCP server, tool count not found on reviewed page Write tools not found on reviewed page Included in Semrush One and SEO Classic plans Tool list and call limits in writing
8 Writesonic SEO AI Agent Content-led agentic workflows Self-serve agent platform Drafts, audits and metered workflow runs $79/month Starter on annual billing, $199, $399 Workflow runs included in your tier
9 Nightwatch NightOwl Rank-tracking-led automation Self-serve agent plus its own MCP server Recommendations and reports; live-site deployment not found on reviewed page €79/month Starter, €159 Professional, €399 Agency Credits consumed per agent task

“Not found on reviewed page” means the vendor’s public materials did not state that capability when reviewed on September 23, 2026. It is not proof that the capability is absent. Prices are published entry rates in each vendor’s own currency, unconverted.

1. Canlah AI: Best overall for agent-run work with an audit trail

Canlah AI ranks first in this comparison because its six named agents ship nothing before a human strategist signs off, and every measurement run is stored as a raw record in a client-owned archive. Canlah AI is a Singapore-based SEO + GEO agency that measures and improves brand visibility inside ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode, reporting AI visibility as re-verifiable ranges with timestamped evidence. Its agents sit in two centres: Argus, Athena and Sage on intelligence, strategy and performance, and Hephaestus, Calliope and Pheme on SEO delivery, content and off-site authority. Clients Canlah AI has served include Baidu AI Cloud, Google Cross-Border Accelerator, ByteDance International Strategy and a Singapore-listed group.

Each record holds the prompt, full answer, cited sources and timestamp. The pricing page prices the GEO service per AI platform: Starter from $1,500 a month (ChatGPT, 4 buyer questions), Growth from $3,000 a month (adds Google AI Overviews, 8 buyer questions) and Full customised (adds Google AI Mode and Gemini, 16 buyer questions), each re-measured monthly on the same buyer questions; work beyond a listed tier is quoted after a free AI visibility report within 48 hours.

Best for

B2B SaaS, export-focused and evidence-sensitive brands that want agents doing the work but need a named human accountable for what reaches the live site, in English and Chinese markets alike.

Limitations

Canlah AI publishes no MCP endpoint, so it cannot be dropped into a Claude Code session the way DataForSEO or SE Ranking can. It sells a managed engagement, not a seat.

Its own AI visibility is also modest. In a September 7, 2026 self-audit of 39 buyer questions run three times each, Canlah AI was named in seven of 84 non-branded OpenAI answers, none of 93 Gemini answers and none of 51 browser-rendered Google AI Overviews.

What to verify

Ask for a dated sample record showing the prompt, engine, full answer, cited sources and the action the agent created from it. Then ask who signs off site changes.

Verdict: The strongest first call in this comparison when agent output must survive an audit. Teams that want to configure the agent themselves should look at Search Atlas OTTO SEO or Claude Code.

2. Search Atlas OTTO SEO: Best for autonomous on-site deployment

Search Atlas OTTO SEO has the widest write access to a live site of the nine entries in this comparison, from $79 a month on Starter. Its page describes an agent that scans a site, then ships changes through Cloudflare, your CMS or your code pipeline once the OTTO Pixel sits in the site header or Cloudflare DNS is connected. Search Atlas states that OTTO automates 99% of the manual work and reads Google Analytics, Search Console and Business Profile to inform each optimisation.

Best for

Agencies and in-house teams wanting technical fixes, meta tags, schema, internal links and local profile work deployed without a developer ticket.

Limitations

Deployment through a pixel or DNS proxy means the change lives in Search Atlas rather than your source of truth, which is why the product ships OTTO Deep Freeze to keep optimisations live after cancellation. The Search Atlas page describes approval mode as a setting to switch on, not the default. Plans start at $79 a month for one project; ten or more begin at $999.

What to verify

Ask to see the change log for one page, then what the page looks like with the pixel removed.

Verdict: The most autonomous option in this comparison, and the one needing the strictest approval settings. Turn approval mode on before the first crawl.

3. Claude Code: Best for building your own SEO agent

Claude Code is the cheapest entry point to agentic SEO in this comparison at $17 a month on annual Pro billing, $20 billed monthly or from $100 a month on Max. Anthropic’s command-line agent is general rather than SEO-specific: it reads and edits your repository, runs commands and calls whatever MCP servers and Skills you connect. That is how teams turn it into a crawler, an internal-link auditor or a schema generator over their own codebase.

Best for

Technical SEO and growth engineering teams that own the repository and want changes as pull requests rather than through a third-party pixel.

Limitations

A built-in SEO dataset was not found on the reviewed Anthropic page, so any search volume or ranking Claude Code states without a connected MCP server should be treated as unverified. Runs are non-deterministic, and guardrails, review and logging are yours to build. Four of the 30 servers Canlah AI verified by live handshake were stale, archived or missing on August 23, 2026, so connectors need their own maintenance check.

What to verify

Put the agent behind a branch and a review step before it touches production pages.

Verdict: The best base layer in this comparison for an agent shaped to your own site. Pair it with one of the data servers below from the first run.

4. DataForSEO MCP: Best for raw SEO data behind any assistant

DataForSEO MCP puts eight APIs behind one connection: SERP, Keyword Data, On-Page, DataForSEO Labs, Backlinks, Business Data, Domain Analytics and the AI Optimization API with its LLM Mentions endpoint. Setup guides cover Claude, Claude Code, Cursor, ChatGPT, Gemini CLI and Docker, and billing stays pay-as-you-go.

Best for

Teams building their own agent who want one vendor for SERP, backlink, on-page and AI-mention data.

Limitations

Breadth is also the trap. Canlah AI’s Skills Radar measured 89 tools on this server’s tools/list handshake, while DataForSEO’s own Cursor instructions note that Cursor supports up to 40 active MCP tools, so modules must be disabled first. Cost is per call, so an unsupervised agent can run a bill up quickly.

What to verify

Set a spending cap before the first agent run, and confirm which modules your client can hold at once.

Verdict: The deepest data layer in this comparison for a self-built agent. Trim the module list before connecting.

5. Ahrefs SEO MCP: Best for teams already paying for Ahrefs

Ahrefs SEO MCP is included on every paid Ahrefs plan, so the marginal cost to an existing subscriber is zero. The plan sets the ceiling: 100 rows per request on Lite, 250 on Standard, 500 on Advanced and unlimited on Enterprise, against 200,000 to two million API units a month. Setup guides cover ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor and Copilot Studio.

Best for

SEO teams already running keyword, backlink and competitor research in Ahrefs who want that data inside a coding agent.

Limitations

Rows per request cap what an agent can reason over in one call, which matters for competitor lists and backlink audits. A write tool was not found on the reviewed page, so changes still need another tool to reach the site.

What to verify

Check the rows-per-request ceiling on your tier against the list you plan to analyse.

Verdict: The lowest-friction data server in this comparison for existing Ahrefs customers.

6. SE Ranking MCP: Best for tool breadth on one connection

SE Ranking MCP exposes 180-plus SEO and GEO tools through one connection, covering keyword research, backlinks, domain analysis, site audits and AI search visibility across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, AI Mode and AI Overviews. It is included in every subscription, runs on the plan’s API credits and opens with 100,000 free trial credits. Standalone it costs from $50 per 250,000 credits.

Best for

Consultants and agencies wanting one connection for classic SEO research and AI visibility questions.

Limitations

Everything is metered in credits, so analysis depth is a budget decision rather than a plan feature. Per-tool credit costs were not found on the reviewed page.

What to verify

Ask for the credit cost of the five tool calls your agent will make most often, then multiply by run frequency.

Verdict: The widest tool surface per connection in this comparison. Model the credits before automating on a schedule.

7. Semrush MCP: Best for existing Semrush One accounts

Semrush MCP gives seven assistants and editors natural-language access to the Semrush dataset: ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Cursor, VS Code and Claude Code. Semrush states that it is included in Semrush One and SEO Classic plans and available to API users.

Best for

Enterprise and mid-market teams whose keyword and traffic reporting already sits in Semrush and who want it inside an agent.

Limitations

The tool count, call limits and row ceilings were not found on the reviewed page, which makes capacity planning harder than with Ahrefs or SE Ranking. Access also depends on the plan family, not merely on paying.

What to verify

Confirm your plan is Semrush One or SEO Classic, then ask support for the tool list and call limits in writing.

Verdict: A sensible default for teams standardised on Semrush. Get the limits documented before building on it.

8. Writesonic SEO AI Agent: Best for content-led agentic workflows

Writesonic SEO AI Agent starts at $79 a month on annual billing for 50 tracked prompts, 15 AI articles and 10 site audits of 100 pages each, rising to $199 and $399. It combines AI visibility tracking with content production and site audits, and its main output is a draft rather than a deployed change.

Best for

Content teams wanting visibility tracking, article production and audit follow-up in one subscription.

Limitations

Agentic workflows are rationed on the lower tiers: Starter lists 10 trial runs and Basic 50, with the Action Center reserved for Enterprise. The product page also advertises the agent at $99 a month, a figure that matches no tier on the pricing page.

What to verify

Ask which plan includes unmetered agentic workflows, and what one run consumes.

Verdict: Strong when the bottleneck is content throughput. Read the workflow limits before treating it as an agent.

9. Nightwatch NightOwl: Best for rank-tracking-led automation

Nightwatch NightOwl costs €159 a month on Professional for 2,500 keywords, 150 AI prompts and 1,000 agent credits, with Starter at €79 and Agency at €399 on a 14-day trial. Credits are spent each time the agent performs a task, on top of daily tracking across Google, YouTube, Bing, Yahoo, DuckDuckGo and Google Maps plus ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, AI Mode and AI Overview.

Best for

Teams whose decisions start from rank and AI prompt movement and who want the agent to investigate a drop rather than rewrite the site.

Limitations

The Nightwatch page describes the agent investigating and recommending; live-site deployment was not found on the reviewed page, so changes still pass through a human. Every plan also ships an SEO MCP server, so you may be paying for an agent you would rather drive from Claude Code yourself.

What to verify

Ask how many credits a technical audit consumes, then compare that with running the same task through the included MCP server.

Verdict: The clearest metering in this comparison. Decide whether you want the agent or just its MCP endpoint.

Why an MCP connection is not the same as an SEO agent

Four of the nine entries in this comparison are MCP servers, and an MCP server proves that a model can read SEO data, not that anything gets done. The server answers tool calls and stops. The agent decides which calls to make and what to change, and that decision layer is where the failure modes live: a hallucinated metric the server never returned, a plan that ignores half the data or a change shipped with no record of why.

Buy and judge the two layers separately. Grade the server on data quality, row limits and cost per call; grade the agent on write access, approval flow and logging. Canlah AI’s position in this comparison rests on the second layer.

Eight checks before you let an agent write to your site

Eight checks decide whether an SEO agent can still be governed once it has write access, and each one can be tested during a trial before a contract is signed.

  • Write scope: List the assets the agent can change, in the contract rather than the marketing copy.
  • Approval mode: Confirm whether human review is the default or a setting, and who holds the seat.
  • Change log: Require a per-change record with page, before value, after value, timestamp and agent.
  • Rollback: Test reverting one change before you authorise a hundred.
  • Deployment path: Record whether changes land in your repository and CMS or only in the vendor’s proxy.
  • Data provenance: Ask which API each number came from, and reject what the agent cannot attribute.
  • Cost ceiling: Set a hard credit or call cap per run, because an agent that loops is an agent that bills.
  • Exit condition: Confirm in writing what survives cancellation, for changes and evidence.

How to choose by use case

The right AI agent for SEO in this comparison depends on how much write access you will grant: three of the nine change a site or repository, four supply data and two produce drafts or recommendations.

Whatever you pick, insist on a per-change record and a rollback path alongside any automation claim, because you cannot govern what you cannot trace.

Frequently asked questions

What are the best AI agents for SEO?

In this comparison Canlah AI ranks first for agent-run work with an audit trail, Search Atlas OTTO SEO for autonomous on-site deployment and Claude Code for building your own agent. DataForSEO, Ahrefs, SE Ranking and Semrush supply the data layer through MCP, while Writesonic and Nightwatch fit content-led and rank-led work. The right choice depends on how much write access you will grant.

What is an MCP server for SEO?

An MCP server for SEO exposes a vendor’s data as tools an AI assistant can call, so the assistant answers with live keyword, backlink, audit or AI visibility data instead of a guess. DataForSEO, Ahrefs, SE Ranking, Semrush and Nightwatch all publish one. Their reviewed pages describe data access, and write tools were not found on any of them.

Can an AI agent do SEO without a human reviewing the work?

No. An AI agent for SEO can crawl, draft, prioritise and in some products deploy, but it cannot own the factual accuracy of a claim or the commercial judgment behind a page. Search Atlas OTTO SEO, the most autonomous entry in this comparison, ships an approval mode, and Canlah AI requires human sign-off before any change ships.

How do I use Claude Code for SEO?

Connect an SEO MCP server such as DataForSEO, Ahrefs or SE Ranking, point Claude Code at the repository that builds your site and keep it on branches and pull requests. Claude Code is included in Anthropic’s Pro plan at $17 a month on annual billing. Without a connected data source, its search volumes and rankings should be treated as unverified.

How much do AI SEO agents cost?

Published monthly prices for the eight third-party entries on September 23, 2026 ran from $17 for Claude Code on annual Pro billing to $999 for the Search Atlas Agency tier, depending on whether you buy a data connection, a self-serve agent or a managed team. MCP access is bundled into Ahrefs, SE Ranking, Semrush and Nightwatch subscriptions, and SE Ranking sells it standalone from $50 per 250,000 credits. Canlah AI’s managed GEO service is priced per AI platform from $1,500 a month, and DeepAudit costs $99 for One read or $189 for Month read; the fee can be credited toward the agency service (not toward Canlah All-Stars).

Is Canlah AI an agent platform or an agency?

Canlah AI is an agency whose delivery runs on six specialised agents under human supervision. Clients buy a managed engagement run by its team and receive the evidence archive; there is no MCP endpoint. After three months of the GEO service, clients can run the work themselves with Canlah All-Stars. Teams that want to run an agent themselves from day one should shortlist a self-serve platform such as Search Atlas OTTO SEO instead.
