AEO Agency in Singapore: Answer Engine Optimisation, Measured
Answer engine optimisation (AEO) is the work of getting your brand into the answer an assistant gives, rather than into the list of links below it. In practice AEO, GEO and AI search optimisation describe the same job under three names, and the differences between them matter far less than whether anyone is measuring the result. We measure it per engine, with repeated runs, and hand you the raw answers.
AEO, GEO, AI search optimisation: what actually differs
Three terms, one job, and a good deal of vendor noise about the distinctions. Here is where they genuinely come from and what each emphasises — then what the work looks like regardless of which word is on the invoice.
AEO — Answer Engine Optimisation
Where it comes from. Older term, predates the current generative engines. Grew out of featured snippets and voice assistants, where one answer was returned and the job was to be that answer.
What it emphasises. Being the answer to a specific question. Historically single-source.
GEO — Generative Engine Optimisation
Where it comes from. Coined in a 2023 academic paper (later presented at KDD 2024) that studied how generative engines select and cite sources.
What it emphasises. Being cited inside a synthesised answer that draws on several sources at once.
AI search optimisation / AIO / LLMO
Where it comes from. Umbrella terms adopted by vendors and press. No agreed technical definition.
What it emphasises. Whatever the vendor sells. Read the deliverables, not the acronym.
Our position: the distinction is real historically and close to irrelevant operationally. We run one engagement covering all of it, and we say so rather than selling the same work twice under two acronyms. The longer version is in GEO vs SEO and in what actually changed in 2026.
What an AEO engagement covers, in the order that matters
- 01
Crawl access for answer engines
Whether OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot, Google-Extended and their user-triggered counterparts can actually fetch your pages — checked at robots.txt and at the CDN, because a clean robots file can still sit behind a closed bot rule. This is the single most common blocker we find, and it makes every other item on this list irrelevant until it is fixed.
- 02
Extractable answers on the page
Each buyer question gets a self-contained answer near the top of the page it belongs to — no reliance on surrounding context, concrete numbers with attributable sources, and a heading that matches how the question is actually asked. This is the part of AEO that survived from the featured-snippet era, and it still works.
- 03
Entity consistency
Your company name, description, location, founders and credentials read the same way everywhere a machine can find them. Engines resolve entities before they answer; inconsistent facts get resolved into somebody else's brand or into nothing.
- 04
Presence on the sources engines cite
Assistants answer category questions largely from third-party pages — comparison articles, directories, communities, review platforms. Being absent from those means being absent from the answer regardless of how good your own site is. This is the part most vendors quietly skip because it cannot be done from inside a CMS.
- 05
Measurement, per engine, repeated
A fixed set of buyer questions run several times per cycle against each engine separately, reported as frequencies rather than as a single screenshot, with the raw answers archived so any number can be re-opened months later. Engines disagree with each other and with themselves; a protocol that ignores that reports noise as progress.
We publish our own numbers, including the bad ones
Any agency can describe a methodology. The test is whether they have run it on themselves and shown the result unedited. We did, and it was not flattering: on ten non-brand commercial queries we placed on one, and a competitor's listicle outranked our own service page on our own brand term. The write-up is public at the audit we ran on ourselves.
Our measurement research is public too. The agent-readiness dataset — 50 cross-border DTC storefronts, 21 machine-readable checks each — is published under CC BY 4.0 with a DOI, raw per-brand probe responses included, so anyone can audit our conclusions against the actual data rather than taking a chart on faith. It also carries our corrections: when two of our own numbers turned out to be artefacts of a path mismatch in our tooling, we withdrew them on the page rather than editing them out quietly.
If you are evaluating vendors — us included — the twelve-question evidence checklist is the procurement version of this section, and whether an agency can guarantee results covers what belongs in the contract instead of a promise.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is AEO and how is it different from GEO?
AEO (answer engine optimisation) is the older term. It grew out of featured snippets and voice assistants, where an engine returned one answer and the job was to be that answer. GEO (generative engine optimisation) comes from a 2023 academic paper on how generative engines select and cite sources, and assumes the answer is synthesised from several sources at once. The practical work overlaps almost entirely: make pages machine-fetchable, answer questions directly and quotably, keep your entity facts consistent, and earn presence on the third-party pages engines cite. If a vendor tells you AEO and GEO require two different retainers, ask which deliverables actually differ.
Do I need an AEO agency in Singapore specifically?
Only if your buyers are here. Two things are genuinely local: the sources engines lean on for Singapore questions (local directories, .sg publications, regional communities) and the phrasing buyers use. Everything else — crawl access, extractable answers, entity consistency, measurement protocol — is not geography-dependent. A local agency should be able to show you Singapore-specific probe data rather than a global template with the city name substituted in.
Can an AEO agency guarantee my brand appears in AI answers?
No, and the offer is a red flag. Generative engines are probabilistic and their retrieval sources change continuously, so nobody controls whether a brand appears in a given answer. What a vendor can commit to contractually is the work and the measurement — probe volume per engine, cadence, evidence retention, output, and a written review point. We set out exactly which clauses we will and will not sign in our guide to whether a GEO agency can guarantee results.
How is AEO measured?
Per engine, across repeated runs, on a query set agreed before the work starts. The unit that means something is a frequency — cited in four of five runs on one engine, zero of five on another — plus which sources are being cited instead of you. A single screenshot of a good answer is not measurement: ask the same question again in a fresh session and it frequently returns different brands.
