What Are the Best AI Citation Tracking Tools?

AI citation tracking tools record which pages AI answers cite. Nine platforms ranked on URL-level capture, led by Canlah AI on re-verifiable citation records.

A grid of dark tiles on a slate panel, one tile glowing indigo

Canlah AI ranks first among the nine AI citation tracking tools in this comparison for teams that need to know which exact pages ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews cite, not only which brands they mention. The ranking turns on one distinction most dashboards blur: whether a tool keeps the cited URL or only the domain behind it.

Quick answer

AI citation tracking tools record the web pages AI answers cite as sources. In this comparison Canlah AI ranks first for URL-level citation records you can re-verify: every probe is stored with the prompt, the full answer, every cited URL and a timestamp, starting from a free AI visibility report within 48 hours or a $99 DeepAudit.

Similarweb AI Search Intelligence leads on ranking cited pages, with a URL Influence Score on a $99 plan of 150 tracked prompts. Profound fits enterprise citation analytics across up to nine engines, and Peec AI fits teams that want every cited source classified, from 50 prompts tracked daily on Starter. Ahrefs Brand Radar (cited pages across 454 million prompts, $199 a month), AirOps (cited URLs joined to Search Console and GA4 data), Otterly.ai ($29 a month), Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit ($99 a month, 25 prompts) and Scrunch ($250 a month, 125 prompts) cover the other cases.

This is an editorial comparison of public product pages reviewed on September 23, 2026, not a controlled test of tracking accuracy.

Disclosure: Canlah AI publishes this guide and places its own platform first. Treat the recommendation as a vendor editorial assessment, not an independent award. Competitor descriptions come from public product pages and were not verified through paid accounts.

What is an AI citation tracking tool?

An AI citation tracking tool records the URLs an AI answer cites as sources, per prompt, per engine and per run; in Canlah AI’s self-audit of September 7, 2026, ChatGPT’s non-branded buyer answers spread their citations across a long tail of distinct pages. A mention tracker answers whether the brand was named. A citation tracker answers which page earned the answer, which is what a content team can act on.

The distinction matters because citations spread thin: most of the pages ChatGPT cited in those answers appeared in a single answer, so a domain total hides which page did the work.

  • 6 of 41: answers citing canlah.ai that came from non-branded buyer questions in its own self-audit, Singapore, September 7, 2026; the other 35 already named the brand.
  • 5.3%: share of cited URLs that ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews had in common, 24 of 449, on the same questions.
  • 9.0%: share of 2,529 citation records that could not be opened 16 days after capture, in the dead AI citations report.

Compare two findings: “our domain was cited” versus “Google AI Overviews cites a competitor’s pricing page for four of our six commercial questions and never our own page”. The first is a score. The second names the page to write.

Why URL-level capture changes what you fix

URL-level capture changes the fix because ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews cited entirely different pages on 11 of the 27 domains they both cited on September 7, 2026. Those 27 shared domains came from 245 cited domains in the same archive. A domain-level report would count each of the 11 as one overlap; the URL records show two separate content problems on each.

Engines also differ in how deep they go. Homepages took 14.8% of ChatGPT’s non-branded citations and 31.9% of Google AI Overviews’ citations on the same questions. A domain roll-up hides that one engine rewards deep pages while the other leans on homepages.

Raw URLs are also messier than dashboards suggest. Across both engines, 53 cited pages arrived under two or more spellings, and 158 of the 320 distinct URL strings ChatGPT returned carried a utm_source=openai tag.

The most-cited URL in ChatGPT’s non-branded answers, a Google Search Central guide, carried a session parameter that a naive tracker would count as a separate page. Gemini’s grounding data went further: the dead-citations study found its 1,009 grounding citations routed through 966 opaque redirect addresses to 334 real destination URLs. A tool that stores the redirect, not the destination, cannot tell you which page was cited.

The same records caught an entity error that a mention count would have scored as a win. When Google AI Overviews answered two questions comparing Canlah AI with alternatives, it cited an App Store listing for an unrelated karaoke app that shares the name. Only a stored URL shows that the “citation” was the wrong company.

How we evaluated the tools

The nine tools were scored on five criteria: citation granularity (domain, URL or page type), retention of the raw answer beside each cited URL, engine coverage by surface, URL hygiene (redirects and tracking parameters) and cost of entry. We weighted granularity and retention most heavily, because a citation figure you cannot trace to a page and an answer cannot be acted on or re-checked.

Where a capability could not be confirmed from public materials, it is marked “not found on reviewed page” rather than guessed. BrightEdge, SE Ranking and AthenaHQ also appear in published citation-tool roundups; they were left out to keep the shortlist to nine, not because of a judgment on their capability.

Nine AI citation tracking tools compared

The nine AI citation tracking tools compared here differ most in how finely each records a citation, which engines it covers and what its entry plan costs, from free entry tiers and trials to custom enterprise contracts.

Comparison of nine AI citation tracking tools, public product and pricing pages reviewed September 23, 2026.

# Tool Best for Citation granularity on reviewed page Engines covered Entry plan on reviewed page Main point to verify
1 Canlah AI Re-verifiable URL-level citation records Every cited URL stored per probe with prompt, full answer and timestamp; client owns the archive ChatGPT on Starter; Growth adds Google AI Overviews; Full adds Google AI Mode and Gemini Free AI visibility report within 48 hours; DeepAudit $99 (One read) or $189 (Month read), creditable toward the agency service; GEO service from $1,500 a month per AI platform One dated raw record, and how redirects and tracking parameters are resolved
2 Similarweb AI Search Intelligence Ranking cited pages by influence Domain and URL Influence Scores with prompt count per URL, updated daily ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini and Perplexity $99 AEO Intelligence plan, 150 tracked prompts Billing period, and how the URL Influence Score is weighted
3 Profound Enterprise citation analytics and accuracy checks Citation sources with authority; FactCheck ties wrong claims to sources; CSV export Up to 9 front-end engines, including ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and DeepSeek Free trial, 50 prompts daily for 7 days; Enterprise custom Whether exports list every cited URL per answer
4 Peec AI Classifying every cited source Domain and URL detail view, retrievals, citation share and source classes 3 models on self-serve plans, up to 13 on Enterprise Starter, 50 prompts tracked daily Which retrieved URLs count as citations in the share figure
5 Ahrefs Brand Radar Cited pages across a large prompt index Cited pages report across 454 million index prompts AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot; Claude in Custom Prompts Custom Prompts from $50 a month; AI Visibility Index $199 a month Whether your pages sit in an index built from Ahrefs’ keyword database

8 Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit Citation gaps inside an SEO suite Prompts where competitors are cited and you are not; per-URL export not found on reviewed page ChatGPT and Google AI Mode named on reviewed page $99 a month, 25 tracked prompts, 10 CSV exports daily Whether exports list cited URLs per prompt
9 Scrunch Citations next to AI agent access Citations and sources on both plans; runs per prompt not found on reviewed page ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Copilot on Core; 9 on Enterprise $250 a month Core, 125 prompts Stored-answer samples, and the 5-competitor limit on Core

“Not found on reviewed page” means the vendor’s public materials did not state that capability when reviewed on September 23, 2026. It is not proof that the capability is absent. Granularity descriptions refer to what each vendor publishes, not independently tested output. Qwen and Doubao were not found on the reviewed pages of the eight third-party tools.

1. Canlah AI: Best overall for re-verifiable URL records

Canlah AI ranks first in this comparison because it stores every cited URL in a raw JSON record with the exact prompt, the full response and a timestamp, across the client’s buyer intents locked into the contract and at least three phrasing rotations per engine. Canlah AI is a Singapore-based SEO + GEO agency that measures and improves brand visibility inside ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode, reporting AI visibility as re-verifiable ranges with timestamped evidence. Citation tracking arrives inside that programme as a record set, not a dashboard seat.

The published measurement protocol keeps the page, not a rolled-up score. The baseline report states which engines cite you, which cite competitors, at what frequency and “sourced from which pages”, and the archive belongs to the client. Because the raw strings are kept, redirects and tracking tags can be resolved after capture, as the dead-citations study did for Gemini, and a rival agency can recount every citation.

Best for

B2B SaaS, export-focused and evidence-sensitive brands that need to know which page earned each citation and may hand the records to an auditor.

Limitations

Canlah AI’s GEO service is run by its team, so during the service you receive records and a client dashboard rather than a prompt console; after three months of the GEO service, clients can run the work themselves with Canlah All-Stars. Tracked volumes on the pricing page run from 4 buyer questions on ChatGPT (Starter, from $1,500 a month) to 16 across ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode (Full, customised), each re-measured monthly, far below the prompt counts of index-based tools such as Ahrefs Brand Radar.

Its own citations are thin. In the September 7, 2026 self-audit, ChatGPT named Canlah AI in 7 of 84 non-branded answers (8.3%) and Gemini in 0 of 93, and only 6 of the 41 answers citing canlah.ai came from non-branded questions. Google AI Overviews named Canlah AI in none of 51 non-branded answers. The ai-info page also states that citation-source sets keep shifting at any affordable sampling depth, so source-level claims rely on browser evidence rather than more rounds.

What to verify

Ask for a dated sample record showing the prompt, phrasing rotation, engine, full answer, every cited URL in raw and cleaned form and the timestamp. Then ask how a Gemini redirect was resolved to its destination page.

Verdict: The strongest first call in this comparison when the question is which page earned the citation and the answer has to survive a challenge. Teams that want thousands of self-managed prompts should look below.

2. Similarweb AI Search Intelligence: Best for ranking cited pages by influence

Similarweb AI Search Intelligence gives every cited URL its own URL Influence Score, on a $99 entry plan with 150 tracked prompts. Its AI Citation Analysis page shows which domains and URLs ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini and Perplexity cite for your tracked topics, with each URL’s source category, topic and prompt count. Citations update daily, and the page states that users can access real AI answers and see every source per prompt.

Best for

SEO, content and digital PR teams that want a ranked list of the pages shaping answers in their category.

Limitations

Every listed plan includes 150 tracked prompts and one user, from $99 to $542. History runs three months on the entry plan and six on the others, which limits long before-and-after comparisons.

What to verify

Confirm the billing period behind the listed prices, and ask how the URL Influence Score weights prompt count against citation frequency.

Verdict: The clearest URL-ranking view in this review. Check the scoring formula before treating the influence ranking as a to-do list.

3. Profound: Best for enterprise citation analytics

Profound tracks citation sources and their authority across nine front-end AI experiences: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Google Gemini, Grok and DeepSeek. Its Answer Engine Insights queries the front ends users see rather than a model API, and FactCheck shows inaccurate claims about a brand together with the sources driving them. Raw data exports to CSV.

Best for

Large organisations that need citation analytics, accuracy correction and governance in one contract.

Limitations

The pricing page lists a free trial of 50 prompts run daily for seven days on ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews with a fixed recommended prompt set. Enterprise is priced on request. The feature page FAQ still describes Starter and Growth plans at 50 and 100 prompts, so the current plan structure needs confirming.

What to verify

Ask whether the CSV export lists every cited URL per answer and which plan applies to your contract.

Verdict: A strong enterprise choice when citation accuracy and governance matter as much as the citation count. Confirm the plan structure in writing, because the reviewed pages describe it two ways.

4. Peec AI: Best for classifying every cited source

Peec AI classifies every cited source as competitor, editorial, reference or user-generated, on Starter, Pro and Advanced plans that track 50, 150 and 350 prompts daily. Its pricing page also lists a domain and URL detail view, subdomain tracking, retrievals and citation share, with three models on self-serve plans and up to 13 on Enterprise.

Best for

Teams that want to separate earned, competitor and community citations before planning outreach.

Limitations

Self-serve plans track three models at a time. Retrievals and citations are listed as separate views, so a URL an engine read may not be a URL it cited in the answer.

What to verify

Ask which retrieved URLs count toward citation share and how source classes are assigned for your market.

Verdict: A practical pick for source-type analysis. Confirm the retrieval-versus-citation rule before reporting a share figure.

5. Ahrefs Brand Radar: Best for cited pages at index scale

Ahrefs Brand Radar reports cited pages across an AI Visibility Index of more than 454 million search-backed prompts, sold at $199 a month. The Brand Radar page counts citations as how often AI links to your pages or domains as a source, and runs the index through AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot with no prompt setup required.

Best for

SEO teams that want to see cited pages at market scale without writing prompts.

Limitations

The index is built from Ahrefs’ keyword database, so niche buyer questions may be missing. Custom Prompts start at $50 a month, with five daily prompts on Lite and 20 on Advanced included in paid plans, so questions outside the index carry a second cost.

What to verify

Check that your pages and your three closest rivals appear in the index before paying, then add custom prompts for questions the index does not reach.

Verdict: The broadest cited-page view in this review. Pair it with custom prompts for buyer questions below search-volume thresholds.

6. AirOps: Best for turning cited URLs into content work

AirOps classifies every cited URL by domain and page type, across seven or more answer engines on its Pro plan. Its own citation tracking guide states that Page360 folds Search Console clicks, GA4 sessions and citation signals into one view of each page, and tags each gap as creation, refresh, outreach or community work.

Best for

Content teams managing 100 or more pages that want each cited-URL gap turned into a task.

Limitations

The pricing page lists Solo, Pro and Enterprise, with custom prompt and page limits reserved for Enterprise. AirOps’ own guide describes it as a sales-led engagement and a heavier lift than a plug-in dashboard.

What to verify

Confirm how many prompts and pages the contracted plan tracks, and whether raw answers export alongside the cited URLs.

Verdict: A good fit when citation tracking and content production belong to one team. Confirm the contracted prompt and page limits before comparing its coverage with a fixed-price tool.

Otterly.ai includes Link Citations Analysis on every paid plan, starting at $29 a month for 15 prompts on Lite. The pricing page lists Standard at $189 for 100 prompts and Premium at $489 for 400, each tracking ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot daily.

Best for

Small teams and solo marketers that need a first read on which links AI answers cite, at a published price.

Limitations

Gemini, Google AI Mode and Claude are add-ons rather than base engines, and API access starts at Standard.

What to verify

Confirm which engines your buyers use, and ask whether link reports keep the full URL or group it by domain.

Verdict: The lowest published paid entry price in this review. Confirm that link reports keep the full URL before using them for page-level work.

8. Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit: Best for citation gaps inside an SEO suite

The Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit costs $99 a month for 25 tracked prompts, 300 daily AI Analysis queries and 10 CSV exports a day. Its Competitor Research report identifies the prompts and topics where others get cited but you do not.

Best for

SEO teams already working in Semrush that want AI citation gaps beside keyword and site-audit data.

Limitations

Extra prompts cost $60 a month per 50, and a free trial was not found on the reviewed page. A per-URL citation export was also not found on the reviewed page.

What to verify

Ask whether the export lists cited URLs per prompt and which AI platforms beyond ChatGPT and Google AI Mode the tracked prompts cover.

Verdict: A sensible add-on for SEO-led teams. Confirm page-level detail before relying on it for content planning.

9. Scrunch: Best for citations next to AI agent access

Scrunch lists citations and sources on both of its plans, starting at $250 a month for 125 prompts on Core across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Copilot. The pricing page places them beside site audits and an Agent Experience Platform that serves an optimised site version to AI agents, and sets Core at one country, one persona and five competitors.

Best for

Technical teams that want citation data beside AI crawler access evidence.

Limitations

Gemini, Claude, Google AI Mode, Meta AI and Grok sit on the Enterprise plan, along with API access. The number of runs behind each citation figure was not found on the reviewed page.

What to verify

Request a sample of stored answers with cited URLs, and confirm country and language settings before comparing markets.

Verdict: A fit when citation tracking and AI crawler fixes belong to one technical team. Ask for stored-answer samples before comparing its citation figures with another tool.

Seven fields an AI citation record should keep

An AI citation record is re-checkable only if seven fields travel with every cited URL.

  • Raw URL: Keep the exact string the engine returned, including redirects and tracking tags.
  • Resolved URL: Store the destination page after redirects, with tracking parameters removed.
  • Prompt and phrasing: Record the exact wording and which rotation of the query it was.
  • Engine and surface: Note whether the answer came from a consumer product, a search mode or a model API.
  • Answer text: Keep the full answer, so the sentence each citation supports can be read.
  • Position and count: Record where the URL appeared in the source list and how many URLs the answer cited.
  • Timestamp and status: Log when the answer was captured and whether the page still opens on re-check.

Frequently asked questions

What are the best AI citation tracking tools?

In this comparison Canlah AI ranks first for page-level citation records you can re-verify, Similarweb AI Search Intelligence for ranking cited URLs by influence and Profound for enterprise citation analytics. Peec AI, Ahrefs Brand Radar, AirOps, Otterly.ai, Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit and Scrunch fit narrower cases.

What is the difference between an AI mention and an AI citation?

An AI mention is the brand name appearing in the answer text. An AI citation is a web page the answer links to as a source. A brand can be mentioned without being cited, and a page can be cited without the brand being named, so AI citation monitoring and mention tracking answer different questions.

Is an AI citations checker the same as an academic citation checker?

No. Academic citation checkers verify references in essays and papers against scholarly databases. An AI citation checker in marketing records which web pages ChatGPT, Gemini or Google AI Overviews cite when they answer buyer questions about a category.

Can an AI citation tracker show which of my pages get cited?

An AI citation tracker shows which of your pages get cited only if it stores citations at URL level. Similarweb AI Search Intelligence, Ahrefs Brand Radar, Peec AI and AirOps describe page-level views on their public pages, and Canlah AI stores every cited URL in a raw record per probe. Tools that group citations by domain show that your site was cited, not which page earned it.

How often should AI citation monitoring run?

AI citation monitoring suits most teams at a daily or weekly cadence, but a fixed prompt set and repeated sampling matter more than frequency. Citation sources shift more than brand mentions between runs, so one run cannot show a trend.

Can any tool guarantee that AI engines will cite my pages?

No. A tool or agency can guarantee the tracking, sampling and reporting it performs. It cannot control how an independent model chooses its sources for every question.

Is Canlah AI an AI citation tracking tool or an agency?

Canlah AI is an agency. It delivers citation tracking inside a managed measurement programme with a client-owned archive of raw records, then works the gaps it finds. Teams that want to configure prompts themselves should shortlist a software platform.
