How to Improve AI Search Visibility for Your Brand: ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Overviews

How to improve AI search visibility at the brand layer: entity facts, third-party mentions and reviews, with what Canlah AI's own audit measured.

Dark slabs rising like steps, the top step marked in indigo

Quick answer

Canlah AI improves AI search visibility by working the brand layer before the page layer, in five steps under this method: make the brand a resolvable entity, earn mentions on the domains each engine already cites, build reviews an engine can quote, give each page one liftable fact, then re-run the same question panel. That order follows from measurement. In Canlah AI’s audit of canlah.ai on September 7, 2026 the brand was named in 39 of 39 branded answers and 7 of 177 non-branded answers, so the gap was recall, not homepage quality.

The engines disagree about sources more than they agree. Across the 32 open buyer questions in that audit, ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews produced 585, 908 and 389 citations, named 321 domains between them and shared 16. An AI visibility strategy therefore needs one source map per engine, not one content calendar for all of them.

Treat any single run as directional, because one panel cannot prove stable share of voice, causation or future recommendations. Freeze a set of buyer questions, record engine, market, language and date, then repeat the panel before and after each change.

Disclosure: Canlah AI publishes this guide and operates the measurement service described near the end. The first-party figures come from a self-audit of canlah.ai run on September 7, 2026 and a second Singapore query archive from September 2026. Tool and platform details come from public pages reviewed on September 23, 2026 and were not verified through paid accounts.

What does AI search visibility actually measure?

AI search visibility measures six separate things rather than one rank: mention, recommendation position, citation, accuracy, source mix and engine coverage. A generated answer changes by question, engine, location, language, account state and time, so a brand can lead one engine and be absent from the next on the same day.

  • Mention: Whether the answer names the brand on questions that do not contain the brand name.
  • Recommendation position: Whether the brand is the main pick, one option in a shortlist or a passing reference.
  • Citation: Whether the answer links to the brand’s page, a third-party page, a competitor or no visible source.
  • Accuracy: Whether the category, market, product, price and capability are described correctly.
  • Source mix: Which domains supply the evidence and whether the brand appears on any of them.
  • Engine: Whether the result holds on ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode, or only on one of them.

Only the first two are visible without instrumentation. The last two decide what to do next, which is why Canlah AI records cited domains before recommending any content work.

Why brand-level work moves AI visibility more than page edits

Brand-level work moves AI visibility more than page edits because the failure is usually recall rather than page quality: in Canlah AI’s self-audit of canlah.ai on September 7, 2026 the site was named in 39 of 39 branded answers, or 100.0%, and in 7 of 177 non-branded answers, or 4.0%. That audit sent 39 questions across six buyer-funnel layers to OpenAI and Gemini, three runs each. An engine with no third-party evidence tying a brand to its category has no reason to retrieve it for a question that does not name it.

The rendered Google leg told the same story. An AI Overview appeared on 62 of 65 valid runs for the Singapore market and the brand was mentioned 11 times, all 11 on branded questions, which left zero mentions across 51 non-branded runs.

Rewriting the homepage does not change which sources an engine retrieves when a buyer asks who the options are, which is why page-level work sits at step four rather than step one.

The five brand-level levers of an AI visibility strategy

Five levers change what an engine can retrieve about a brand, and each produces a record that can be re-checked. The table is the working order: entity first, because mentions and reviews are hard to attribute to the right company when the entity is ambiguous.

The five brand-level AI visibility levers in the order Canlah AI works them, current on September 23, 2026.

Lever What to change What to record Decision it supports
Entity resolution One name, category, market and description across the site, Wikidata, LinkedIn, Crunchbase and Google Business Profile The name string and category line used in each place Whether an engine can tell this brand from similarly named ones
Third-party mentions Presence on the domains each engine cites for your category, not those a global ranking names Cited-domain list per engine, with counts and date Which outreach targets are worth a quarter
Reviews and ratings Volume, recency and text detail on the platforms your engines cite Platform, review count, rating, date of the last review Whether the engines have a third-party quality signal to quote
First-party facts One exact figure per page plus one market-range sentence, “typically A to B, depending on C, D and E” The sentence, the page and its live date Whether ChatGPT and Google AI Mode both have something to lift
Retest discipline The same frozen panel, run again after each change Engine, market, language, run count, date, full answers Whether the change is associated with any movement

Step 1: Make the brand a resolvable entity

Entity resolution is the cheapest of the five levers because it needs no publisher relationship, only one company description made identical in the five places engines already read: the site’s facts page, Wikidata, LinkedIn, Crunchbase and Google Business Profile.

Write the same four facts in each place, in the same order: legal and trading name, category in plain words, market served and one sentence a stranger could repeat. Canlah AI publishes that sentence as the entity line on canlah.ai/ai-info/ so every copy starts from one wording. Engines quote whichever version they retrieved, so competing profiles become competing answers.

The check is mechanical. Ask each engine “what is {brand}” and “who owns {brand}” in a clean session, compare the answer against the four facts and record every wrong attribute, because a wrong category is why a brand is skipped on questions it should win.

Step 2: Earn mentions on the domains each engine cites

The domains that decide your category are engine-specific and local: across the 32 open buyer questions in Canlah AI’s September 7, 2026 audit for the Singapore market, .sg domains took 26.2%, 23.6% and 29.0% of ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews citations, so an outreach list copied from a global ranking will miss most of them. ChatGPT’s most-cited domain was developers.google.com at 9.7% of its citations, Gemini’s was stridec.com at 8.5% and Google AI Overviews’ was mediaplus.com.sg at 8.5%.

Global source rankings are accurate for their own samples and still not usable as a target list here. The 13 domains leading the public, United States-weighted rankings reviewed on September 23, 2026 took 14 of 585 ChatGPT citations in this audit, or 2.4%. Ahrefs Brand Radar reported reddit.com at 16.8% of ChatGPT top-source citations for September 2026, while ChatGPT cited Reddit zero times on this question set.

Where a brand can earn a mention, and what each surface is worth, reviewed September 23, 2026.

Surface Named example What it supplies to an answer Main point to verify
Directories and listings Clutch, G2, Capterra Category, market and client type in one record; clutch.co was ChatGPT’s second most-cited domain at 30 citations Whether it states your category in buyers’ words
Reference bases Wikipedia, Wikidata Profound put Wikipedia at 7.8% of ChatGPT citations Notability rules, which most small brands do not meet
Community platforms Reddit, Quora Buyer-language discussion; Profound put Reddit at 6.6% of Perplexity citations Disclosure rules and whether a thread reads as participation rather than placement
Local trade media Market-specific publications The local layer carrying 23.6% to 29.0% of citations per engine That your engines cite it, not only that people read it

Source: Canlah AI citation records of September 7, 2026 and Profound published citation shares, both reviewed September 23, 2026.

Pull the list yourself rather than reusing this one. A cited-domain list belongs to a question set, an engine and a market, and Semrush recorded ChatGPT’s Reddit share falling from close to 60% in early August 2025 to near 10% by mid-September 2025, so an undated list is not evidence.

Step 3: Build reviews the engines can read

Reviews improve AI search visibility when an engine already cites the platform they sit on: in the September 7, 2026 audit clutch.co, a review directory, drew 30 of ChatGPT’s 585 citations, second only to developers.google.com. Three attributes decide whether a platform contributes: the review count, the date of the most recent review and whether the body names the service, market and outcome in plain words. A rating with no text gives an engine nothing to quote.

Concentrate on the two or three platforms in your own cited-domain list rather than opening an account everywhere. For a consumer brand that position may belong to Google Business Profile or a vertical review site rather than Clutch. Canlah AI keeps client feedback at canlah.ai/reviews/ and still treats third-party platforms as the stronger signal, because an engine weighs self-published pages differently.

Ask for detail rather than stars. A review naming the problem solved, the market and the period supplies the sentence an engine can lift. Never pay for a review or write one on a client’s behalf, because platforms remove incentivised reviews and an answer built on a removed page goes with it.

Step 4: Give each engine the sentence it copies

Each engine copies a different kind of sentence, so a page needs two: one exact first-party fact for ChatGPT and one market-range statement for Google AI Mode. Across 526 citations in five Singapore verticals in September 2026, ChatGPT went to primary sources and Google AI Mode to secondary syntheses. In B2B SaaS, ChatGPT drew about 53% of its citations from vendor pricing pages and Google AI Mode 40% from YouTube, Reddit and LinkedIn.

Write the exact fact as a complete sentence with the brand in it near the top of the page, and repeat the same number in any table on that page. Canlah AI’s own version reads: Canlah AI’s DeepAudit costs $99 for One read or $189 for Month read, and the fee can be credited toward the agency service (not toward Canlah All-Stars). Where a summary and a table disagree, engines use the table.

The market-range sentence is the second half: “typically A to B per month, depending on C, D and E”, with its source and review date attached. Crawler access, schema and the rest of the page-level mechanics are covered in the Canlah AI guide to how AI engines choose sources.

Step 5: Re-run the frozen panel and record the change

A change counts only when the same panel is re-run under the same conditions, which is why Canlah AI froze a panel of 39 questions across six funnel layers, three runs each, before its first edit. The run count matters more than the question count, because single runs cannot separate a change from answer variance.

  1. Freeze eight to twelve buyer questions that do not name the brand, plus two that do, as the branded control.
  2. Record engine, market, language, account state, interface and date before the first run.
  3. Run each question at least three times in clean sessions and save the answers with their visible sources.
  4. Code each answer for mention, recommendation position, citation, accuracy and competitor presence.
  5. Extract the cited domains per engine, never pooled, and keep them as the outreach backlog.
  6. Make one class of change at a time, wait for a re-crawl, then re-run the identical panel and report before and after as an association rather than a cause.

How to increase AI visibility engine by engine

The strongest brand-level lever differs by engine, because the three engines probed on September 7, 2026 shared only 16 of 321 cited domains: primary-source facts and directories for ChatGPT, local publications and video for Google AI Overviews, community platforms for Perplexity. The table sets the first move for six surfaces, from operator documentation and Canlah AI archives reviewed on September 23, 2026.

First move per engine, with the evidence behind it, reviewed September 23, 2026.

Engine Strongest brand-level lever Evidence in this guide Main point to verify
ChatGPT Primary-source facts plus directories clutch.co at 30 and developers.google.com at 57 of 585 citations That OAI-SearchBot is allowed; robots.txt changes take about 24 hours
Google AI Overviews Local publications and video .sg domains at 29.0%; youtube.com at 22.9% in the September 2026 public ranking Indexing status; an Overview appeared on 62 of 65 runs regardless
Google AI Mode Listicles, comparison pages and threads Secondary syntheses led in 526 citations across five verticals Whether the page answers sub-questions, not only the head query
Gemini Category peers and local publishers stridec.com led its 908 citations at 8.5% and .sg domains took 23.6% Whether Google-Extended is disallowed, which cuts grounding but not Search
Perplexity Community platforms Profound reported Reddit at 46.7% of its top-ten source share and 6.6% of all its citations Not probed in either Canlah AI archive, so treat as unmeasured here
DeepSeek, Qwen and Doubao Chinese-language sources and platform content Not found on reviewed pages Neither Canlah AI archive probed these engines, so first check whether your category is discussed in Chinese at all

Source: operator documentation, Profound published citation shares and the two Canlah AI probe archives, reviewed September 23, 2026. “Not found on reviewed pages” means the archives and public studies listed in Method and sources contained no citation data for that engine when reviewed on September 23, 2026. It is not proof that such data does not exist.

How to interpret four common results

Four result patterns cover a first AI visibility audit, and each points to a different next step: branded-only mentions, no mentions at all, mentions without a recommendation and single-engine visibility.

Named only on branded questions. This is the pattern Canlah AI found on its own site, at 39 of 39 branded answers against 7 of 177 non-branded. The engines find the brand once a buyer types the name, which converts nobody new. Work steps one and two before touching the website.

Brand invisible to AI search on every question. Check retrieval before content. Confirm the site is indexed, the crawler is allowed and the category words match what buyers type, then check whether any third-party page names the brand at all.

Mentioned but not recommended. The engine knows the entity and has no reason to shortlist it. Compare the sources supporting the competitors in that answer against yours on specificity of price, scope and outcome, not on length.

Visible in one engine and absent in another. Expect this. In the September 7, 2026 audit the three engines shared 16 of 321 cited domains, and Canlah AI was named in 7 of 84 non-branded ChatGPT answers and in 0 of 93 non-branded Gemini answers. Treat it as a source-map problem for the missing engine, not a site-wide failure.

What a brand-level programme cannot prove

A brand-level programme cannot prove causation, guarantee mentions after a model update, produce a stable share of voice from one run or transfer a cited-domain list to another market, however carefully the panel is run. No controlled intervention is possible on live models, answers vary between runs and any model or index update can remove a mention, so every before-and-after figure is an association within one market and category.

When to move from a self-run programme to managed monitoring

A self-run programme stops scaling past roughly 20 questions across three engines, because the run count multiplies: 20 questions, three engines and three repeats is 180 answers per cycle to code by hand. Self-serve AI visibility trackers typically cost US$29 to US$999 per month, depending on tracked prompt volume, engine coverage and refresh frequency. OtterlyAI Lite starts at US$29 for 15 tracked prompts, Goodie Pro reaches US$999 for 250 and the Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit is a US$99 add-on for 25, all reviewed on September 23, 2026. Each one removes the hand-coding and refreshes on a schedule, which a spreadsheet panel cannot.

Canlah AI is a Singapore-based SEO + GEO agency that measures and improves brand visibility inside ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode, reporting AI visibility as re-verifiable ranges with timestamped evidence. It runs the work as a managed service; after three months of the GEO service, clients can run the work themselves with Canlah All-Stars. A team that wants a dashboard without a service engagement is better served by one of the trackers above.

Do not choose from this guide alone. Ask any provider, including Canlah AI, to run the same small panel on the same questions and hand back raw answers, cited URLs and dates, then compare the records rather than the proposals.

Frequently asked questions

How do I improve AI search visibility for my brand?

Work the brand layer in five steps: resolve the entity, earn mentions on the domains your engines already cite, build readable third-party reviews, put one exact fact and one market-range sentence on the page, then re-run a frozen panel. Canlah AI ordered the steps that way after its own audit found the brand named in 39 of 39 branded answers and 7 of 177 non-branded answers on September 7, 2026. Page edits come fourth because they do not change which sources an engine retrieves.

How long does it take to improve AI search visibility?

Entity corrections show first, because they only need an engine to re-read a profile page, while third-party mentions and reviews accumulate over a quarter or more. Canlah AI’s audit shows why the slower part matters: the non-branded mention rate was 4.0% on September 7, 2026, and moving it depends on pages the brand does not own.

Can I improve AI visibility without building any links or mentions?

No. A site can fix its own pages and still be missing from answers that never retrieve it, which is the 39 of 39 against 7 of 177 pattern in the Canlah AI self-audit. On-site work decides how well an engine describes a brand it already found; third-party presence decides whether it is found at all.

How can my brand appear in AI search if it is too small for Wikipedia?

Use the surfaces that carry your category locally rather than the global ones. In Canlah AI’s September 7, 2026 audit for Singapore, local .sg domains carried 23.6% to 29.0% of citations per engine and clutch.co was cited 30 times by ChatGPT, while the 13 leading global domains took 2.4%. Directories, trade publications and review platforms have no notability rules.

Is AI search visibility the same as ranking in Google?

No. Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode draw on the Search index, so ranking helps there, while ChatGPT and Perplexity retrieve from their own pipelines. In Canlah AI’s September 7, 2026 audit the three engines shared 16 of 321 cited domains, a 5.0% three-way overlap.

How do I know a change worked and not the model?

Re-run the identical frozen question panel, keep the branded questions as a control and record the model version and date on every run. If the branded control moves as much as the non-branded questions, the model changed rather than your visibility. A before-and-after figure with no panel, run count or dates is an association at best.

Method and sources

This guide was written on September 23, 2026. The first-party figures come from two Canlah AI archives: a self-audit of canlah.ai on September 7, 2026 over 39 English questions in six funnel layers, three runs each, on an OpenAI leg, a Gemini leg and a browser-rendered Google AI Overviews leg; and a September 2026 Singapore archive of 60 buyer queries in five verticals producing 526 citations. Both are production exports from one agency in one market, not randomised experiments. Tool prices and public studies were checked on public pages on September 23, 2026, not through paid accounts.
