Which Industries Benefit Most From GEO? A 2026 ChatGPT Test Across 8 Singapore Industries

Which industries benefit most from GEO? A 24-question ChatGPT test in Singapore: AI named businesses in every answer and cited clinics' own sites most.

Points joined by a thin line on a dark panel, one point glowing indigo

Quick answer

The industries that benefit most from GEO (generative engine optimization) are those where buyers ask an AI engine to compare providers before a high-value, trust-heavy purchase and the answer names specific providers. In a Canlah AI test of 24 Singapore buyer questions across eight industries on October 25, 2026, ChatGPT named at least one business in all 24 answers, 5.0 businesses per answer on average.

The strongest fit was aesthetic clinics, dental clinics, tuition and enrichment centres and B2B software, where ChatGPT cited the named providers’ own websites for 55.6% to 90.9% of its picks. For law firms, restaurants and property agents it leaned on legal rankings, food guides and regulator pages instead, which moves most of the GEO work off-site.

Key findings

  • AI already picks named businesses in every industry tested: ChatGPT (gpt-5.5 with web search, location Singapore) named at least one business in 24 of 24 answers and 119 businesses in total, 5.0 per answer.
  • Restaurants drew the most names and renovation the fewest: 8.0 businesses per answer for restaurants, 6.0 for tuition centres and for B2B software, 3.3 for home renovation contractors.
  • Clinics’ own pages carried the answer: 10 of 11 aesthetic clinics named (90.9%) and 11 of 13 dental clinics named (84.6%) had a page on their own site cited in the same answer.
  • Law, restaurants and property leaned on third parties: only 2 of 14 law firms (14.3%), 2 of 24 restaurants (8.3%) and 0 of 11 property agencies named had their own site cited.
  • Reviews and forums barely appeared: of 117 cited links, 56 were business sites (47.9%), 30 government pages (25.6%), 23 third-party lists (19.7%), 1 a review platform (0.9%) and none a forum or social post.

How to tell whether GEO fits an industry: a four-check decision rule

GEO matters most where three conditions hold together: buyers ask a comparison question before buying, the purchase is high-value or trust-heavy, and AI answers name specific providers. The 24-answer test settled the third condition for all eight Singapore industries tested, because every answer named at least one business. A fourth check, the sources the AI cites, decides what the GEO work involves.

Decision rule for a business owner

Check How to run it What the answer means for GEO
Buyers compare before buying Look for “which X is best for Y” questions from real customers Comparison questions are where AI answers name providers
The purchase is high-value or trust-heavy Ask whether one customer is worth a lot over time, or the decision touches health, money, law or a home One AI mention can be worth a whole customer relationship
AI answers name providers Ask ChatGPT three real buyer questions and count the businesses named Named providers form the shortlist that GEO competes for
The answer’s evidence Open the cited links and sort them into own sites, rankings and directories, or government pages Own sites cited means fix your own pages first; rankings cited means get onto those rankings first

Applied to the test, clinics, tuition centres and B2B software pass all four checks: comparison-led, trust-heavy purchases and answers built on the providers’ own pages. Law firms and renovation contractors pass the first three, but their answers drew more on rankings, directories and accreditation lists. Restaurants drew the most names, yet each booking is a smaller purchase and the answers leaned on food guides. Property agents fit least well as individual businesses: the answers named large agencies and pointed buyers to the regulator’s register.

GEO means generative engine optimization: getting a business named and cited inside AI answers such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews. It is not geo-location targeting and not “near me” local search, where a map listing is ranked by distance, category and reviews. The two get confused because both matter to local businesses.

In the 24 Singapore answers, ChatGPT grouped providers by the buyer’s need, such as a treatment, a legal matter, a syllabus or a flat type, and by credentials. Branches and districts came up only as convenience notes. None of the 117 cited links was a Google Maps listing. A strong map listing helps local search, but it does not by itself put a business into an AI shortlist.

Study design: 24 Singapore buyer questions across eight industries

The test asked ChatGPT 24 buyer questions, three for each of eight industries, once each on October 25, 2026. The questions were written before any answer was seen, phrased the way a Singapore buyer asks and contained no business names.

Each question went to the OpenAI Responses API with model gpt-5.5, web search switched on and the user location set to Singapore. Every response reported the model version gpt-5.5-2026-04-23, and all 24 calls completed on the first attempt. For each answer, the businesses named were counted and every cited link was classified by who publishes it.

Results: how often ChatGPT named businesses in each Singapore industry

ChatGPT named businesses in all 24 answers, but how it backed those names split the eight industries into two groups: answers built on the providers’ own pages and answers built on third-party pages.

Source: Canlah AI ChatGPT test, October 25, 2026, one run per question. A named business counts in the fourth column when a page on its own site was cited in the same answer. With three answers per industry, industry figures are directional.

Clinics: most clinic links were inner pages rather than home pages. Of the 22 clinic-owned pages cited, 18 were treatment, service, doctor or about pages and 4 were home pages. Clinic answers also leaned on credential sources: 9 of the 35 links in clinic answers were government or regulator pages, such as the Singapore Dental Council, the Singapore Medical Council and the Ministry of Health.

Tuition and software: the centres’ and vendors’ own pages carried most picks. In the HR and payroll answer, three of the five vendors named were backed by government vendor listings (One-Stop Payroll and GoBusiness) rather than by their own sites.

Law firms: the divorce-lawyer answer named five lawyers from five firms and cited a single ranking page for all of them. Across the three law answers, Doyle’s Guide, Chambers, Legal 500 and the Law Society directory supplied 6 of 13 links.

Restaurants and property agents: the birthday-dinner answer named 10 restaurants from two list pages, the MICHELIN Guide and Tatler Asia. The condo-buying answer named five property agencies and cited only Council for Estate Agencies pages.

Results: which sources ChatGPT cited for each Singapore industry

Business sites were the largest source type overall at 56 of 117 cited links (47.9%), but the mix changed sharply by industry.

Source: Canlah AI ChatGPT test, October 25, 2026. Counts are unique cited links per answer. A ranked roundup on a media site counts as a list; “Other” covers a product maker’s FAQ, an academic article and industry-association pages.

Review platforms and forums were almost absent. The only review-platform link was a Qanvast page in a renovation answer, and no answer cited a forum or social post. ChatGPT’s searches consulted 1,887 sources across the 24 answers but cited 117, and the cited links are the ones a buyer sees under the answer.

Home renovation was the most mixed industry: 4 contractor sites, 3 lists and directories (renovationcost.sg, SingaReviews and the CaseTrust list of accredited firms), 3 government pages, the Qanvast link and 2 pages from the consumer association CASE.

What the 24-answer ChatGPT test does and does not show

The test shows that on October 25, 2026, for 24 English buyer questions asked from Singapore, ChatGPT named specific businesses in every answer and drew its evidence from different sources in different industries: own pages for clinics, tuition centres and software vendors, and rankings, guides and regulator pages for law firms, restaurants and property agents.

It does not show that the pattern is stable, because each question ran once and a repeat can name different businesses. It does not show what other AI engines would answer. The link between a cited own page and a business being named is an association, not causation: no page was changed to test it.

What a business in a top-fit GEO industry should do first

A business in a top-fit industry should start where the AI already looks, then make its own pages answer the buyer’s question, then measure the same questions every month.

  1. Get onto the third-party pages AI cites for the category. Ask ChatGPT the business’s real buyer questions, collect the cited links and list the rankings, directories and accreditation lists that appear. In this test that meant Chambers, Legal 500, Doyle’s Guide and the Law Society directory for law firms, and the CaseTrust list and review roundups for renovation contractors.
  2. Answer the comparison question on the business’s own site. In clinic, tuition and software answers, ChatGPT quoted pages that state who does the work, their credentials, what a treatment or plan covers and who it suits. A clinic needs one clear page per treatment within MOH and SMC advertising rules, not a price comparison. Canlah AI’s GEO Playbook: Dental & Aesthetics Edition covers this for clinics and the Law Firms Edition for law firms; see also GEO for Singapore clinics and GEO for B2B SaaS.
  3. Measure on fixed questions. Pick the buyer questions that matter, ask each one the same way every month and record who is named and which pages are cited. One answer is a snapshot; a monthly series shows movement.

Canlah AI is a Singapore-based SEO + GEO agency that runs this measurement for clients in English and Chinese. Its GEO service is priced per AI platform: Starter from $1,500 a month covers ChatGPT on four buyer questions, Growth from $3,000 a month adds Google AI Overviews on eight, and Full is customised and adds Google AI Mode and Gemini on 16 (pricing). Each buyer question is asked 5–10 real ways and re-tested monthly against the starting baseline. The written bar is “AI names you at least 30% more often than at your starting baseline, re-tested every month on the same buyer questions,” with no ranking guarantee. In Canlah AI’s client projects, new AI citations typically begin to appear about 15 days after the first batch of changes goes live. The full service path is on the product page.

Frequently asked questions

Which industries need GEO the most?

The industries that need GEO most are those where buyers compare providers before a high-value or trust-heavy purchase and AI answers name specific businesses. In Canlah AI’s October 25, 2026 ChatGPT test of eight Singapore industries, aesthetic clinics, dental clinics, tuition centres and B2B software fit best: ChatGPT named 3.7 to 6.0 providers per answer and cited most named providers’ own pages. Law firms and renovation contractors also fit, but their answers leaned more on rankings and directories.

Is GEO the same as local “near me” SEO?

No. GEO is about being named and cited inside AI answers, while “near me” local search ranks map listings by distance, category and reviews. In the 24-answer ChatGPT test, none of the 117 cited links was a Google Maps listing. Local businesses benefit from both, but a map listing alone does not put a business into an AI shortlist.

Is GEO right for my business?

GEO is right for a business when its buyers ask an AI engine comparison questions and the answers name competitors. The quickest check is to ask ChatGPT three real buyer questions, count the businesses named and see whose pages are cited. If competitors are named and the business is not, GEO is worth testing, and Canlah AI’s free AI visibility report runs that check within 48 hours.

Methodology and limitations

The test ran on October 25, 2026 between 09:33 and 09:35 UTC through the OpenAI Responses API, called directly at api.openai.com, with model gpt-5.5, the web search tool forced on and the user location set to Singapore. Every response reported gpt-5.5-2026-04-23. It asked 24 English questions, three per industry, once each. All 24 calls completed on the first attempt, with no retries and no failed calls. The API is a programmatic stand-in for ChatGPT with search; the consumer app can differ through personalisation and model routing.

“Businesses named” counts distinct providers of the service asked about; a named practitioner and their firm count once, and portals, regulators, product makers and venues are excluded. Cited links come from the answer’s citation annotations, de-duplicated per answer, and were classified by publisher and page type. One reviewer coded all 24 answers, and the rules and every coded row are archived with the raw responses.

A single run is a snapshot, and AI answers vary from run to run. With three questions per industry, industry figures are directional. The results describe ChatGPT only; Gemini, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode and Chinese-language questions were not tested.
