How to Do GEO for Hotels in AI Travel Answers: OTAs, Reviews, Direct Booking

GEO for hotels in eight steps: which surfaces AI travel answers book through, the rate and review data engines read, and how to defend direct bookings.

Dark slabs rising like steps, the top step marked in indigo

Quick answer

Canlah AI approaches GEO for hotels in this guide as eight steps in dependency order: crawl access, the property page, price markup, rate connectivity, OTA parity, reviews, third-party evidence and a frozen traveller question panel. The order matters because most hotel answers are settled in three places a hotel does not own: the online travel agency listing, the review platform and the booking module inside the engine. Google opened hotel booking inside AI Mode on August 27, 2026 with ten integrated partners: Booking.com, Choice Hotels International, Expedia, Hilton, Hotels.com, IHG Hotels & Resorts, Marriott International, Priceline, Trip.com and Wyndham Hotels & Resorts. An independent property reaches that module through a connectivity partner or an OTA rather than through its own website, so four of the eight steps (rate connectivity, OTA parity, reviews and third-party evidence) happen off the hotel website.

Canlah AI runs the eight steps as one programme and reports each engine separately, because a gain in the Google booking module is not a gain in ChatGPT. Canlah AI is a Singapore-based SEO + GEO agency that measures and improves brand visibility inside ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode, reporting AI visibility as re-verifiable ranges with timestamped evidence.

Treat any single answer as directional. One run cannot prove a stable shortlist position, causation or a future recommendation. If a first check shows a gap, freeze a panel of 20 to 40 traveller questions and repeat it by engine and language before rebuilding anything.

Disclosure: Canlah AI publishes this guide and operates the paid measurement and execution service described near the end. Engine behaviour comes from Google’s and OpenAI’s own documentation, and the platform rules from Booking.com’s and Tripadvisor’s own published policies. Pages were reviewed on September 23, 2026 and no vendor product was tested through a paid account.

What does AI visibility for a hotel measure?

AI visibility for a hotel measures six separate results rather than one rank, and a single combined score hides the one that is broken.

  • Mention: whether the answer names the property when a traveller describes a trip without naming any hotel.
  • Shortlist position: whether the property is the lead recommendation, one of four options or a passing reference.
  • Booking path: whether the booking option opens the hotel’s own rate or an OTA listing of the same room.
  • Rate accuracy: whether the nightly rate, room type, cancellation window and fees match what the property sells on the date of the query.
  • Source path: which page the answer cited, from the hotel site and OTA pages to Tripadvisor, destination guides, Maps listings and video.
  • Review evidence: which review sentences the answer quoted and from which platform.

A property can win every mention and still lose the booking, because the booking path is set by rate feed data, not page content.

Which surfaces AI travel answers book through

Six surfaces carry hotel answers, and a hotel’s own website is the direct route into only two of them. The other four are reached through a rate feed, an OTA contract or a review platform, which is why GEO for hospitality is less about publishing than about distribution hygiene.

Surfaces that carry hotel answers, and the route a property reaches each one by, reviewed September 23, 2026.

Surface What the answer is built from Route for an independent property What the hotel controls directly
Google AI Mode hotel booking Ten integrated partners, live rates and guest reviews, checkout via Google Pay Hotel Center through a connectivity partner or an OTA listing Rate accuracy, availability, cancellation terms
Google free booking links Rates supplied to Hotel Center, ranked on preference, value, landing page and price accuracy Hotel Center account, a campaign bid, live rates and a landing page Price accuracy score, rate freshness
Google AI Overviews and Maps Crawled pages, Business Profile data, hotel attributes and Google reviews Googlebot access plus a complete Business Profile Page content, attributes, review replies
ChatGPT web answers Pages reachable by OAI-SearchBot, plus guides, roundups and review sites Open robots.txt, then the off-site evidence layer Page content, crawl access, third-party facts
ChatGPT travel apps Expedia and Booking.com inventory surfaced inside the conversation The OTA contract, not the hotel website Rates and photos in the OTA extranet
DeepSeek, Qwen and Doubao Sources to check first: Trip.com listings, Xiaohongshu posts and Mafengwo trip reports Chinese-language listings and creator coverage Listing facts, Chinese property page

Source: Google, OpenAI and Booking.com public materials reviewed September 23, 2026. The ChatGPT travel apps row rests on the Expedia and Booking.com app announcements, which returned bot challenges on that date and could not be re-read. The Chinese-engine row lists the sources to check first, not a documented retrieval rule. Routes describe product behaviour, not tested performance.

A hotel that publishes an excellent property page and never connects a rate feed can be described accurately and still never appear in the module where the traveller books, because that module reads rates rather than prose. Canlah AI therefore scores hotels on the answer layer and the distribution layer separately.

How to do GEO for a hotel, step by step

GEO for a hotel runs in eight steps in dependency order: crawl access, page content, price markup, rate connectivity, OTA parity, reviews, third-party evidence, then measurement. Skipping ahead wastes work, because a step that cannot be seen or booked through produces no change in any answer.

Step 1: Open crawl access before writing a word of content

Access decides whether any later work can be seen. OpenAI’s crawler documentation states that sites which opt out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, and that robots.txt changes take about 24 hours to apply. Googlebot governs the page path and Google-Extended governs model training; neither reaches the booking module, which is a Hotel Center feed rather than a crawl.

Hotel sites are prone to failing this step, because the bot rules written to stop rate scrapers can also block answer engines. Canlah AI tests each user agent from outside the property network and records which ones receive the room list and which get a challenge page.

Step 2: Write the property page for the constraints travellers state

Travellers rarely type a hotel name into an assistant; they type constraints. A request such as “quiet hotel near Orchard MRT with a pool and late checkout under S$300 a night” is matched only by a page stating the walking time, pool hours, checkout time and rate band in words a model can lift.

Put the answer in the first sentence under every heading. Canlah AI’s cited-page study of 60 Singapore buyer questions and 526 citations found that the copied sentence is almost always a paragraph’s first sentence, and that roughly 73% of copied facts sit in the first 30% of the page. State the rate band, check-in and check-out times, cancellation window, any resort fee and the distance to the landmarks guests ask about.

Step 3: Mark up rates in the format Google validates

Google’s hotel price structured data reference names Microdata, not JSON-LD, as the default and recommended format for hotel price accuracy validation, and states that JSON-LD is deprecated for that check. The deprecation applies strictly to price accuracy and does not affect JSON-LD elsewhere in Search, so most properties carry both formats for different jobs.

The required Hotel properties are name, address and makesOffer with nested pricing, while HotelRoom requires offers and accepts bed, occupancy and amenityFeature. Google states that structured data values must match the visible information on the website, so a page that displays one rate and marks up another damages the price accuracy record that ranks the free booking link.

Step 4: Connect the rate feed so the direct rate can appear at all

Free booking links are the only route by which a hotel’s own rate appears beside the OTAs at no click cost. Google’s Hotel Center documentation states that any property with a bid in a hotel campaign, available rates and a landing page is eligible, that clicks cost nothing and that bids do not affect how those links rank.

The ranking signals are published: consumer preference, value offered to the user, landing page experience and the historical accuracy of prices supplied to Google under its Price Accuracy Policy. Three of the four are operational rather than editorial, which is why a property with a stale channel manager loses the direct slot to an OTA that refreshes hourly.

Step 5: Hold rate and content parity across every OTA carrying the property

Rate parity is a GEO control, not only a commercial one. In an illustrative case where an assistant sees a direct rate of S$268 and an OTA rate of S$249 for the same room and dates, the answer leads with the lower figure and links to that channel. Page copy does not override a number.

Content parity matters as much as price. Room names, bed configurations, accessibility facts and fee disclosures that differ between the property site, Booking.com, Agoda, Expedia and Trip.com leave an engine holding several versions of one hotel, and the version it repeats is the most frequent, not the correct, one. Canlah AI records those gaps by channel before recommending content.

Step 6: Run the review programme on the platforms the answer quotes

Review platforms supply the sentences AI travel answers quote, and each publishes rules worth working to. Booking.com sends review invitations about 48 hours after check-out, gives guests three months to respond, accepts reviews only from guests who booked through the platform, keeps them public for 36 months and weights the score so the newest review counts most.

Tripadvisor reported 31.1 million reviews and 38.1 million photos and videos submitted in 2024, a 9% increase on its previous report, of which 30.9% were for accommodation, down from over 40% in 2022. Ask for reviews inside each platform’s window, answer every critical review with the fact the complaint got wrong and never generate review text, because both platforms remove synthetic submissions.

Step 7: Earn the third-party evidence the engines quote

Third-party pages write much of a hotel answer, and none of them sit on the property domain. Destination guides, newspaper travel sections, “best hotels in” roundups, Maps reviews and creator video all feed the source layer an engine quotes from.

Pitch the property to the publications that already rank for the panel’s trip questions, keep one factual sheet identical wherever it is republished and treat a corrected fact on a frequently cited third-party page as higher priority than a new hotel blog post. Where guests research in Chinese the source graph changes again: Trip.com listings, Xiaohongshu posts and Mafengwo trip reports carry weight no English-language press mention does.

Step 8: Freeze a traveller question panel and keep the raw answers

Write 20 to 40 questions the way guests type them, keep most free of the property name and split them across destination, constraint, comparison and brand questions. Run the panel on a fixed schedule against every engine chosen in step 1 and store the answer text, cited URLs, shortlist position, rate shown and where the booking link goes.

Canlah AI’s own September 2026 self-audit shows the shape of a defensible panel: 39 questions in six buyer-funnel layers, 234 probe runs at three repeats per question and 317 raw evidence files kept beside the report. That audit ran on Canlah AI’s own site rather than a hotel, and is quoted for method, not as a hospitality benchmark.

Hotel GEO framework by layer

A hotel GEO programme records seven layers, from crawl access to measurement, and each record supports one decision about where to act next. The rows follow the eight steps above, with third-party evidence folded into the measurement layer through the cited URLs.

What to record at each layer of a hotel programme, and the decision each record supports.

Layer What to record Decision it supports
Crawl access OAI-SearchBot, Googlebot and Google-Extended status plus the agents the WAF blocks Whether any later work can be seen
Property page Distances, times, fees, rate band and cancellation terms present in text Which questions the property can match
Price markup Hotel and HotelRoom Microdata present and whether marked-up rates match displayed rates Whether price accuracy supports the direct link
Rate connectivity Hotel Center status, rate freshness, free booking link impressions Whether the direct rate appears beside the OTAs
OTA parity Rate gaps by channel and date, plus room name and fee differences Which channel wins the booking
Reviews Volume, recency and score per platform, response rate, quoted sentences Which platform supplies the answer’s words
Measurement Mention, shortlist position, booking path, rate shown and cited URLs per engine What to change and what to leave alone

Source: Google and OpenAI documentation reviewed September 23, 2026, plus Canlah AI’s measurement protocol. The layers are Canlah AI’s working order, not a formula published by any engine.

How to interpret five common results

Five common results of a hotel AI visibility check each point to a different layer to fix first: access, distribution, the rate feed, source accuracy or language coverage.

Absent from every engine. Start at access and connectivity, not content. A property that challenges OAI-SearchBot, holds no Hotel Center connection and carries no rates in structured data is invisible for structural reasons publishing will not fix.

Recommended, but the booking link opens an OTA. The visibility work succeeded and the distribution layer did not. Compare the direct and OTA rates for the same room and dates, check free booking link eligibility, then check the price accuracy record. Canlah AI treats this as a distribution ticket, not a content ticket.

Visible in ChatGPT, absent from the Google AI Mode hotel module. The page layer works and the feed layer does not. Inspect Hotel Center connectivity, rate availability and the landing page, in that order.

Shown at the wrong rate, room type or cancellation policy. Fix the disagreeing source rather than adding exposure. Find which of the four sources (page, markup, rate feed or OTA listing) is stale and raise the refresh cadence to match how often the rate moves.

Strong in English answers, absent from Chinese ones. Treat this as a source problem, not a translation problem. DeepSeek, Qwen and Doubao retrieve different platforms, so the Chinese panel needs its own questions, listings and creator coverage.

What a hotel AI visibility check cannot prove

A hotel AI visibility check cannot prove three things: a stable shortlist position, a causal link between a change and a placement or a revenue outcome.

  • It cannot prove a stable shortlist position, because answers change with question wording, travel dates, account state, location and time.
  • It cannot show that a markup, rate or review change caused a placement change, without repeated observations on a fixed timeline.
  • It cannot substitute for revenue management, because an accurate answer pointing at an uncompetitive direct rate still loses the booking.

When to move from spot checks to ongoing monitoring

Ongoing monitoring is justified once any one of four conditions holds: AI referrals already appear in analytics, several OTAs carry rates that drift from the direct rate, a rebrand has left stale facts across dozens of listings or the group operates in more than one language. Groups reach that threshold sooner, because every added property multiplies the listings, review streams and rate feeds that can disagree.

A single independent hotel may not need a platform yet. A documented monthly panel of 20 to 40 questions, stored with its raw answers, is enough until properties, engines or languages make manual checks unreliable.

Canlah AI is less useful to a property whose only gap is distribution. Canlah AI does not operate a channel manager or booking engine, so a hotel whose direct rate is missing from free booking links needs its connectivity partner first, and Canlah AI scopes that work as a dependency rather than a deliverable.

Do not choose a provider from this guide alone. Ask any provider, Canlah AI included, for raw answer records on your own destination questions before signing, and verify engine coverage and sample size yourself.

Frequently asked questions

What is GEO for hotels?

GEO for hotels is generative engine optimization applied to a property: measuring how AI assistants answer destination, constraint and comparison questions, then fixing the property page, price markup, rate connectivity, OTA listings and reviews behind those answers. Much of that work sits in a rate feed and on third-party listings, not on the hotel website.

Is AEO for hotels different from GEO for hotels?

No. AEO for hotels and GEO for hotels describe the same work under two labels, and providers use them interchangeably. AEO wording leans on answer formatting and schema, while GEO wording usually includes the distribution and review layers, so read the scope rather than the acronym.

How do I get my hotel into Google’s AI Mode hotel booking module?

Google launched hotel booking in AI Mode on August 27, 2026 in the United States in English, with ten integrated partners including Booking.com, Expedia, Marriott International and Trip.com. An independent property is reached through Hotel Center with a connectivity partner, or through an OTA that is already a partner, so the first step is confirming your booking engine provider supplies rates to Google. Check current country and partner coverage with Google directly, because the rollout was still expanding on September 23, 2026.

Can GEO for hospitality shift bookings from OTAs back to the direct channel?

GEO for hospitality can shift some bookings back to the direct channel, and only where the direct offer is competitive. Free booking links place the hotel’s own rate beside the OTA rates at no click cost, and their ranking signals include value offered to the user and historical price accuracy, so a higher direct rate or a stale feed loses the slot on merit. GEO removes the reasons an engine prefers an OTA; it does not override the traveller’s comparison.

Does AI SEO for hotels replace conventional hotel SEO?

No. AI SEO for hotels does not replace conventional hotel SEO. Crawlability, structured data, Business Profile completeness and destination content serve both channels, and the connectivity and review work is additive. The difference is measurement: an AI visibility panel records mentions, shortlist position, booking paths and cited sources; a rank tracker records none of them.

Does Canlah AI do GEO for hotels and resorts?

Yes. Canlah AI measures hotel and resort destination and property questions on the AI platforms in the client’s tier, re-measured monthly: Starter covers ChatGPT, Growth adds Google AI Overviews and Full adds Google AI Mode and Gemini. It also executes the page, schema and off-site work behind the result. Canlah AI does not operate a channel manager or booking engine, so rate connectivity and parity enforcement stay with the property’s distribution stack and are scoped as a dependency, not a deliverable. Confirm the buyer intents and the engine list in writing before signing. Perplexity and the Chinese engines are not part of standard tracking.

Method and sources

This guide draws on six public sources reviewed on September 23, 2026: four Google and OpenAI documentation pages, the primary sources for how each engine reads hotel data, plus Booking.com’s and Tripadvisor’s published review material. No vendor dashboard was tested through a paid account, and no hotel’s rates, feeds or placements were measured for this guide.
