How to Rank in Google AI Mode in Search: Query Fan-Out, Local Results, Citations

How to rank in Google AI Mode: what query fan-out changes, the measured local-results gap, how to read AI Mode in Search Console and which tools track it.

Dark slabs rising like steps, the top step marked in indigo

Quick answer

In this guide, Canlah AI reduces how to rank in Google AI Mode to three conditions: an indexed page that is eligible for a Google Search snippet, a passage that answers one sub-question the query fan-out searched for and cited third-party sources that describe the brand. Ranking here means earning one of the supporting links beside the AI response, not a numbered position. Google states there are no additional requirements and no special schema or AI text file needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode.

Google AI Mode is a separate execution problem from Google AI Overviews, not the same work on a second surface. Ahrefs sizes AI Mode at 16.9 million monthly prompts against 312.8 million for AI Overviews in its AI Visibility Index. Google states the two features may use different models and techniques, and a Local SEO Data study of 1,120 local searches found 28.5% of Local Pack businesses missing from AI Mode for the same query. Canlah AI treats the two as separate measurement legs and offers a free AI visibility report, delivered within 48 hours, before you choose a plan.

Treat any single AI Mode check as directional. One run cannot prove stable share of voice, causation or future citations, and the study above found the specific businesses shown for a query changed day to day. Freeze a panel of buyer questions and repeat it by market, device and language before deciding what to change.

Disclosure: Canlah AI publishes this guide and offers the free AI visibility report and the paid measurement described below. Details for Google Search Central, Google Search Console, SE Ranking, ZipTie, Ahrefs Brand Radar, Semrush and Profound come from their public pages, reviewed on September 23, 2026, and were not tested through paid accounts. The Canlah AI figures come from a self-audit of canlah.ai run on September 7, 2026 and from Canlah AI’s published pricing and cases pages.

What does ranking in Google AI Mode actually mean?

A Google AI Mode result has six possible outcomes for a brand, not one rank position. The same brand can be linked without being named, named without a link or visible only on the follow-up question. Each outcome needs a different fix.

  • Link inclusion: one of your URLs appears among the supporting links shown beside the response.
  • Mention: the response text names your brand, product or location.
  • Sub-question coverage: your page supplies the answer to specific fan-out sub-questions while other sites supply the rest.
  • Accuracy: the response states your price, service area, credentials and category correctly.
  • Local listing: for a service query, AI Mode returns business listings at all and yours is among them.
  • Follow-up durability: the brand survives the second and third question, where the shortlist forms.

The last two decide most commercial outcomes. AI Mode is built for comparisons and follow-ups, so a brand that disappears once the user adds a constraint has a source problem, not a ranking problem.

How Google AI Mode differs from Google AI Overviews

Google AI Mode is a separate surface from Google AI Overviews, with 16.9 million monthly prompts against 312.8 million in Ahrefs’ AI Visibility Index and its own set of supporting links. That index tracks 454 million monthly prompts across six platforms, reviewed September 23, 2026. Google’s own documentation states that AI Mode and AI Overviews may use different models and techniques, so the set of responses and links they show will vary.

Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode compared on the six dimensions that change the work. Public documentation and vendor pages reviewed September 23, 2026.

Dimension Google AI Overviews Google AI Mode What this changes in execution
Where it appears Above the classic results for a normal search A separate tab and surface the user opens deliberately You cannot see AI Mode by watching the standard results page
When it appears Only when Google judges it additive, so it often does not trigger Whenever the user is in AI Mode, including on questions that never trigger an overview Queries with no overview are still live AI Mode queries
Question shape Short and mid-length queries Longer, nuanced questions, comparisons and follow-ups The panel must contain multi-constraint questions, not head terms
Monthly prompts tracked 312.8 million (Ahrefs AI Visibility Index) 16.9 million (Ahrefs AI Visibility Index) Smaller surface, weighted toward longer comparison questions
Local businesses Local provider mentions appear inside the summary A separate selection: 28.5% of Local Pack businesses were absent for the same query Local Pack rank is not evidence of AI Mode presence
Reporting Counted in Search Console under the “Web” search type Counted in Search Console under the same “Web” search type Neither can be isolated from organic clicks in the standard report

How query fan-out decides which pages AI Mode cites

Query fan-out means Google AI Mode splits one question into subtopics and searches each one at the same time, so the realistic target for one page is two or three sub-questions, not the whole answer. Google’s Search Help page describes that decomposition. Google Search Central states that both AI features may issue multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources while the response is being generated, which is how a wider and more diverse set of links is displayed.

This is why keyword-level thinking fails in AI Mode. A page competes for sub-questions it was never written for, such as “what does it cost” or “who is it not suitable for” inside a broader comparison query.

Google also states that AI Mode will provide a set of web links when confidence in the quality or helpfulness of a response is not high enough. Canlah AI treats that link set as the cheapest visibility on the surface, because it rewards the same fundamentals as classic Search.

How to optimize for Google AI Mode step by step

Optimizing for Google AI Mode takes six steps in this order: build a question panel, decompose the responses, clear eligibility, write liftable answers, work the cited sources and re-run the panel. Each step produces evidence you can re-read later, which matters because AI Mode responses change between runs.

Step 1: Build an AI Mode panel of multi-constraint questions

Write ten to fifteen questions in the shape AI Mode is used for, with a category, a constraint and a location: “which accounting software handles multi-currency invoicing for a Singapore company with under twenty staff”. Add three branded questions as a control.

Run each one in AI Mode, logged out where possible, in the target market, on desktop and mobile. Record the response, every supporting link, every brand named and the date. Canlah AI reports these as frequencies, such as “linked in 2 of 3 checks”, because a single run is not a position.

Step 2: Decompose each response into its sub-questions

List the sub-questions the response answered: definition, cost, eligibility, comparison, risks, named options. Mark which site supplied each one. That list, not a composite score, is the backlog.

A sub-question answered entirely by a competitor page or a listicle is an off-site job. A sub-question answered by nobody is the fastest on-site win available.

Step 3: Clear the eligibility check before writing anything

Confirm that every target page returns HTTP 200, is indexed, is not blocked in robots.txt and carries no noindex, nosnippet, data-nosnippet or tight max-snippet rule. Google states that a supporting link must be indexed and eligible to be shown with a snippet, and that more restrictive preview controls limit how content is featured.

This step is cheap and binary. In Canlah AI’s self-audit on September 7, 2026, 80 of 80 crawled pages were indexable and Googlebot was not blocked, which ruled the cause out in one afternoon.

Step 4: Put a liftable answer under every sub-question

Give each sub-question its own heading and answer it in the first sentence underneath, with one verifiable fact: a price, a count, a date, a credential or a service area. Keep the fact in the visible text and make any structured data match it, as Google’s guidance requires.

Tables are worth the effort here. Column headers that carry judgment, such as “Best for” or “Starting price”, give the model a complete fact per cell rather than a sentence it must reassemble.

Step 5: Work the sources AI Mode already cites

List every supporting link from Step 1 and group it by type: competitor pages, listicles, directories, review sites, forums, video and media. For each source, record whether it names you, whether it describes you correctly and whether it links to you. Entering those pages is slower than on-site work. Canlah AI treats it as the main lever for open, unbranded questions, where its own September 7, 2026 self-audit found canlah.ai cited on none of 51 open buyer questions.

Step 6: Re-run the panel and keep both archives

Repeat the same questions after each meaningful change and keep the old responses beside the new ones. Report movement as a range across runs, with the window, market and device stated. Before-and-after movement is association, not causation.

What AI Mode changes for local SEO

Google AI Mode left out 28.5% of the businesses shown in the Local Pack for the same query in a Local SEO Data study of 1,120 local searches, published June 11, 2026. The study covered seven service verticals and 13 United States cities and measured an overlap of 71.5%, with a 95% confidence interval of 69.2% to 73.8%. Comparing only the top three results from each source, the overlap fell to 48%, so Local Pack ranking is not evidence of AI Mode presence.

Three findings from that study change day-to-day local work. AI Mode showed 999 businesses that never appeared in the Local Pack. Query wording decided whether any business appeared: the bare term “divorce lawyer” returned zero listings across all 10 cities tested, and adding “near me” brought listings back in 38 of 38 cases. Review volume split by vertical: AI Mode-only businesses carried 49% more reviews at the median in consumer categories, with plumbers at a median of 546 reviews in AI Mode against 125 in the Local Pack, while lawyers and medical specialists in AI Mode had fewer reviews and more often saw educational content instead of listings.

The practical rule for a service business is to test each priority term three ways, bare, with “near me” and with the city name, before concluding that AI Mode excludes it. Google’s guidance adds one item: keep Business Profile and Merchant Center information up to date, because AI features draw on it.

How to measure AI Mode visibility

Google AI Mode visibility can be measured three ways: Search Console totals, a manual question panel or a third-party tracker. Only the last two separate AI Mode from organic Search. Google states that sites appearing in AI features are included in overall search traffic and reported in the Performance report within the “Web” search type, and a separate AI Mode filter was not found on the reviewed page.

Where Google AI Mode coverage is publicly documented for seven providers. Public pages reviewed September 23, 2026.

Source: each provider’s public pages, reviewed September 23, 2026; coverage refers to public positioning, not independently tested capability. “Not found on reviewed page” means the provider’s public materials did not name that capability when reviewed on September 23, 2026. It is not proof that the capability is absent.

How to interpret five common AI Mode results

Five Google AI Mode results recur in a question panel, and each one points to a different fix.

Linked but not named: The response used your page for one sub-question without describing the brand. Add the brand fact, such as who it is for and what it costs, to that same passage.

Named but not linked: AI Mode has an entity for you but took the evidence elsewhere. Find the page it did link and check what it states about you. Then answer the same question directly on a page of your own.

Present on the first question, absent on the follow-up: The shortlist forms on the second question, where constraints appear. Write the constraint page: segment, price band, integration, location.

Visible in AI Overviews but not in AI Mode: Treat the two as separate programmes. The fan-out reached different sub-questions, so re-run the panel in AI Mode before assuming the surfaces agree.

No business listings at all: For a local query, test the same term with “near me” and with the city name first. The Local SEO Data study found that adding “near me” restored listings in 38 of 38 cases.

What optimizing for AI Mode cannot prove

Optimizing for Google AI Mode cannot prove four things, so discount any report or proposal that claims them.

  • It cannot prove a stable share of voice: the study above recorded the businesses shown changing day to day.
  • It cannot prove that one content change caused a citation without a controlled timeline and repeated runs.
  • It cannot guarantee future links after a model or index update, and Google states that indexing and serving are not guaranteed.
  • It cannot substitute for classic SEO, because eligibility for AI Mode is the same technical eligibility as Search.

Where Canlah AI fits

Canlah AI is a Singapore-based SEO + GEO agency that measures and improves brand visibility inside ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode, reporting AI visibility as re-verifiable ranges with timestamped evidence. It offers a free AI visibility report, delivered within 48 hours, before you choose a plan. Its GEO service is priced per AI platform: Starter from $1,500 a month (ChatGPT, 4 buyer questions), Growth from $3,000 a month (adds Google AI Overviews, 8 buyer questions) and Full customised (adds Google AI Mode and Gemini, 16 buyer questions), each re-measured monthly, so Google AI Mode tracking sits on the Full tier. Perplexity and Chinese engines are not part of standard tracking.

The limitation is visible in Canlah AI’s own archive. The Google leg of its September 7, 2026 self-audit rendered 70 requests in the Singapore market in English: 65 returned a page, 62 showed an AI Overview and canlah.ai was cited in 10 of them, all on branded questions and none of the 51 open buyer questions. Every one of those requests measured AI Overviews, not AI Mode; the same audit ran AI Mode only as a single-shot check of 11 queries. Beyond that, Canlah AI’s published AI Mode evidence is eight probes in one anonymised restaurant case, which is too small a sample to support any share-of-voice claim.

Ask any provider, Canlah AI included, to run your panel in AI Mode in front of you and show the responses and supporting links. Verify the diagnosis against evidence you can re-read rather than trusting a composite score.

Frequently asked questions

How do I rank in Google AI Mode?

To rank in Google AI Mode, make the page indexed and snippet-eligible, then answer the fan-out sub-questions in first sentences that each carry a verifiable fact. After that, get named on the third-party pages AI Mode already cites. Google states there are no additional requirements beyond standard Search eligibility, so the work is answer fit and distribution rather than a new technical layer.

Is optimizing for AI Mode different from optimizing for AI Overviews?

Yes. Optimizing for Google AI Mode differs in execution from optimizing for AI Overviews, although the eligibility rules are identical. Google states the two features may use different models and techniques and therefore show different links. AI Mode handles longer comparison questions and follow-ups, so Canlah AI keeps a separate question panel for it even when the site is the same.

Does my Google Business Profile affect AI Mode?

Yes, as one input. Google’s guidance lists keeping Business Profile and Merchant Center information up to date among the fundamentals for AI features. Local results in AI Mode still behave separately from the Local Pack: a Local SEO Data study of 1,120 searches found 28.5% of Local Pack businesses absent from AI Mode for the same query, so a Business Profile needs its own AI Mode tracking.

Can I see AI Mode traffic in Google Search Console?

Google Search Console shows AI Mode traffic only as part of the total “Web” search type. Google states that AI features are included in overall search traffic and reported in the Performance report within that type, and a separate AI Mode filter was not found on the page reviewed on September 23, 2026. Use a manual panel or a tracker that names AI Mode to attribute a change.

Does Canlah AI track Google AI Mode?

Canlah AI treats Google AI Mode as a separate measurement leg from Google AI Overviews and reports AI Mode probes separately in one published restaurant case. Google AI Mode is tracked on the Full tier (customised, 16 buyer questions); Starter covers ChatGPT and Growth adds Google AI Overviews. Confirm the engine list and the buyer questions in writing before signing. Its September 7, 2026 self-audit of canlah.ai measured AI Overviews at scale and ran AI Mode only as a single-shot check of 11 queries.

Can an agency guarantee a Google AI Mode citation?

No. A provider can guarantee the measurement, the sampling protocol and the work delivered, but nobody controls which links Google shows for a given question or whether it shows business listings at all. Treat a guaranteed AI Mode citation as a warning sign rather than a selling point.

Method and sources

This guide was written from public documentation and product pages available on September 23, 2026. Google’s descriptions of AI Mode, query fan-out, eligibility and Search Console reporting come from Google Search Central and Google Search Help. Tool coverage was read from each vendor’s public page, not tested through paid accounts. The Canlah AI figures come from a first-party self-audit of canlah.ai that measured Google AI Overviews at scale and AI Mode only in a single-shot check, and from Canlah AI’s published pricing and cases pages.
