How to Do Grok SEO in AI Answers: X Posts, Web Search, DeepSearch
Grok SEO across Web Search, X Search and DeepSearch: what each surface reads, the steps that earn a place in answers and the tools that track Grok.
Quick answer
In this guide, Canlah AI defines Grok SEO as work on three retrieval surfaces rather than one: Web Search reads the open web; X Search reads posts and profiles on X; DeepSearch runs repeated passes of both before it writes. A plan that only improves the website covers one of the three, and xAI prices the gap openly: as of September 23, 2026, X Search is billed at $5 per 1,000 posts fetched and $10 per 1,000 user profiles fetched on top of token costs, while Web Search carries no separate per-result fee.
Six AI visibility platforms reviewed for this guide document Grok tracking, from a $20 entry plan on Rankscale AI to enterprise contracts at Profound and Scrunch AI. Canlah AI does not probe Grok on its retainers as of September 23, 2026, so this guide publishes the manual method in three jobs: make the site fetchable and quotable for Web Search, build a citable presence on X so X Search has something to return, then freeze a prompt panel and rerun it, because Grok re-reads X at answer time rather than a stored index.
Treat any single Grok answer as directional. One run cannot prove a stable position or causation on a surface that re-reads live posts. Freeze a panel of eight to twelve buyer questions and repeat it by mode, market and account state before deciding what to change.
Disclosure: Canlah AI publishes this guide and sells the managed measurement service described near the end. Grok behaviour, parameters and prices come from xAI’s own developer documentation, and competitor coverage from vendor pricing pages, all reviewed on September 23, 2026 and none tested through a paid account. Canlah AI did not probe Grok on its retainers on that date, which its own section states plainly.
What does Grok SEO mean?
Grok SEO covers four surfaces: three retrieval surfaces that read live sources at answer time, plus the model memory Grok uses when no search runs. Each rewards a different asset, so a team that publishes another blog post is working mainly on one of the four.
- Web Search: the
web_searchtool browses live web pages at answer time, scoped byallowed_domainsandexcluded_domains, five each. - X Search: the
x_searchtool runs keyword search, semantic search, user search and thread fetch across X, scoped byallowed_x_handlesandexcluded_x_handlesat 20 each and byfrom_dateandto_date. - DeepSearch: the consumer research mode on grok.com and inside X, running several passes over both corpora before answering.
- Model memory: what Grok says with no retrieval, set by training data and reference pages such as Grokipedia, xAI’s AI-generated encyclopedia launched on October 27, 2025.
Grok 4.7, released on September 21, 2026, is the model xAI lists behind these tools as of September 23, 2026, and consumer access runs from a free tier through SuperGrok at $30 a month.
How Grok Web Search and X Search differ
Grok Web Search and Grok X Search are separate tools with separate scoping parameters and separate billing, and only X Search carries a published per-item price of $5 per 1,000 posts fetched. A brand that treats them as one channel usually works on the unbilled one and leaves the other to chance.
Grok’s two documented retrieval tools, from xAI developer documentation reviewed September 23, 2026.
| Retrieval tool | What it reads | Scoping parameters xAI documents | Cost above tokens | The asset that earns a place |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Web Search (web_search) |
Live web pages, searched and browsed at answer time | allowed_domains and excluded_domains, five each; image search; image understanding |
No separate per-result fee published | A fetchable page that answers one buyer question in its first 60 words |
X Search (x_search) |
Posts and profiles on X, by keyword, semantic match, user and thread | allowed_x_handles and excluded_x_handles, 20 each; from_date and to_date; image and video understanding |
$5 per 1,000 posts fetched; $10 per 1,000 user profiles fetched | Posts, replies and threads from accounts that discuss your category |
Source: xAI developer documentation for the Web Search, X Search and Citations tools, reviewed September 23, 2026. The parameters describe the API, which is where xAI documents this behaviour. The consumer product exposes modes rather than parameters, and its retrieval settings are not published.
Grok citations mix both surfaces in one list. xAI returns every URL the agent encountered by default, with x.com post identifiers beside ordinary web URLs, so post-level and page-level evidence sit in one array. Inline citation links are on by default through the Responses API and opt-in in the xAI Python SDK, and xAI states that enabling them does not guarantee a citation on any given answer.
Why X posts matter more to Grok than to other AI engines
X posts matter more to Grok because X Search reads posts, replies and whole threads on X and filters them by up to 20 handles, a corpus the crawlers feeding ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity reach only in part. That filter gives away the unit of evidence. On the web surface the asset is a URL; on the X surface it is an account, which is why a brand can hold a strong position in Grok and a weak one elsewhere.
Thread fetch compounds this. Because Grok can pull a whole conversation rather than one post, a reply under a widely read category post can enter the evidence pool without your account posting anything.
Profound’s announcement of its Grok support describes tweet analysis that shows buyers how posts influence Grok responses. That is a vendor description rather than an independent test, but it is the clearest public confirmation found for this guide that the X layer can be measured on its own.
The date parameters make recency an explicit filter. from_date and to_date are first-class parameters, so a brand whose last category post falls before the window a current-events question uses sits outside the evidence pool for that answer.
How to do Grok SEO, step by step
Grok SEO takes seven steps in dependency order, because content work on a page Grok cannot fetch is wasted and X work does nothing until an account exists worth fetching.
Step 1: Fix general crawler access, because Grok has no documented crawler name
An xAI crawler reference comparable to OpenAI’s bot documentation was not found when checked on September 23, 2026, so there is no named user agent to allow the way OAI-SearchBot is allowed. The community ai.robots.txt list carried 175 AI user agents on that date and not one was an xAI or Grok agent, while third-party directories list a GrokBot string with no xAI documentation behind it.
Grok access is therefore governed by your general rules. Remove any wildcard Disallow: / group, check whether your CDN has a blanket AI-crawler category enabled and read server logs for unfamiliar agents rather than one known name.
Step 2: Write pages Web Search can quote in a single pass
Lead every section with a self-contained answer to the question in its heading, then add detail. Canlah AI’s September 2026 citation study of 92 cited pages found the copied sentence was almost always a paragraph’s first sentence, and about 55 of the 75 copied facts that could be located sat in the first 30% of the page. State figures exactly: “from S$1,600 a month” can be quoted, “affordable monthly packages” cannot.
Step 3: Keep one X account that actually posts in your category
Grok X Search filters by account, capped at 20 handles per request, so one active handle that states category facts in text is the minimum X asset. Post the facts a buyer would ask for in plain sentences rather than screenshots, because an image-only post depends on image understanding being switched on. Keep the display name, bio, website field and category language identical to the website.
Step 4: Earn mentions inside other people’s posts and threads
Run your buyer questions in Grok with DeepSearch on and list every x.com status link in the citations. Those accounts are the shortlist Grok already reads for your category, and accurate, disclosed participation in those threads moves the X layer faster than posting more from your own handle.
Step 5: Give the entity one set of facts across site, X profile and reference pages
A model that finds conflicting facts about a brand is less likely to shortlist it. Keep the legal name, category, location and founding year identical on the website, in Organization schema, in the X bio and on any encyclopedia-style page. xAI’s documentation uses grokipedia.com as its worked example of a domain-scoped web search.
Step 6: Refresh on a clock, because the date filter is first-class
Publish a visible last-updated date, keep dateModified in Article markup in sync with it and hold a posting cadence on X rather than a launch burst. A brand whose last relevant post falls outside the window a DeepSearch run picks is absent from that answer’s evidence pool.
Step 7: Skip the levers with no evidence behind them
Some popular fixes have no confirmed effect on Grok retrieval. llms.txt is one, because no major answer engine has confirmed using it. Paid engagement pods, bought followers and reply spam belong in the same group, and carry platform-level risk a blog post does not.
How to interpret five common Grok results
Five Grok results cover most first panel runs, and each points to a different fix: not retrieved, cited only from X, cited only from the web, described inaccurately and visible in Grok alone.
Not retrieved on any question: Check Step 1 first, because a blanket CDN rule and an empty X presence produce the same blank result from opposite causes. Run the question twice, with search modes on and off, to separate retrieval from knowledge.
Named with only x.com citations: Grok is building your category picture from posts alone. That is a Web Search problem, usually an unfetchable page or a page whose first lines say nothing quotable.
Named with only web citations: This is the mirror case, and the more common one for B2B brands. The category conversation on X is happening without you, so the fix is participation rather than another page.
Retrieved but described inaccurately: Prioritise correction over exposure. Align the website, structured data, X bio and any reference page on the same approved facts, then rerun the exact question and keep both answers.
Visible in Grok and absent from ChatGPT or Google AI Overviews: Treat this as a corpus difference rather than a fault. In Canlah AI’s September 7, 2026 self-audit only 15 domains of 165 appeared in both the ChatGPT and the Google AI Overviews source pools, and the gap between a web engine and an X-reading engine is likely wider, although no public study has measured it.
Which tools track Grok, and what each plan covers
Six AI visibility platforms reviewed for this guide publicly document Grok coverage, from a $20 entry plan on Rankscale AI to enterprise contracts at Profound and Scrunch AI. Three of the six place Grok on an upper tier or an enterprise contract, so the plan matters more than the logo.
AI visibility platforms that document Grok coverage, from pricing and product pages reviewed September 23, 2026.
| Platform | Lowest plan that includes Grok | Best for | How the Grok coverage is described | Main point to verify |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rankscale AI | $20 entry, Pro $99 for 1,200 credits | The lowest published entry price among the six, with Grok on every paid tier | Grok beside ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Copilot and DeepSeek | Every engine and repeat run draws on one credit pool |
| Promptwatch | $95 Essential, 50 prompts | Teams that want answers collected from model interfaces | Grok is one of a list from which each plan tracks four, collected by scraping model interfaces | Whether four models per plan or all models per prompt applies |
| Peec AI | $95 Starter, 50 prompts, three models | Teams that track the default six engines first and add Grok later | Grok listed as an upgrade model on higher tiers, outside the default six | Which tier carries the upgrade; the added price was not found on reviewed page |
| AthenaHQ | $295 Starter, 3,600 credits | Broad panels, with 11 models on one credit meter | Grok among 11 models, one credit equal to one AI response | Credit burn once Grok joins a daily panel |
| Profound | Enterprise; price not found on reviewed page | Brands that need the X layer measured through tweet analysis | Seven engines including Grok, with tweet analysis of how posts influence responses | Whether tweet analysis is included at your contract level |
| Scrunch AI | Enterprise, above the $250 Core plan | Enterprise teams that also need Meta AI and Google AI Mode in one panel | Grok on Enterprise beside Claude, Gemini, Meta AI and Google AI Mode | The price step between Core and the tier carrying Grok |
Source: vendor pricing and product pages reviewed September 23, 2026. “Not found on reviewed page” means a vendor’s public pages did not name that item when checked on that date; it is not proof the item is absent. Qwen and Doubao coverage was not found on reviewed page for any platform in this table.
A separate X-layer metric was not found on reviewed page for any of the six. Profound comes closest with tweet analysis, and the other five describe Grok as one more engine in a mention-rate column. Ask any shortlisted vendor, in writing, for the citation list split by x.com against the rest.
What Grok SEO cannot promise
Grok SEO cannot promise five outcomes, because xAI controls retrieval and Grok re-reads live posts on every run.
- It cannot guarantee a page or a post appears for any given question.
- It cannot prove one change caused a new appearance without a frozen panel and dated repeat runs. Before-and-after movement is association, not causation.
- It cannot hold a position through a model release, a change in the date window a DeepSearch run picks or a shift in what the category posts inside that window.
- It cannot be read from one answer, because repeat runs return different posts.
- It cannot be bought, and any vendor guaranteeing a Grok recommendation is promising something it does not control.
When to move from a manual panel to ongoing monitoring
A manual Grok panel becomes hard to sustain above roughly ten questions on a monthly cadence, or once several markets, languages or account states are in scope. Ongoing monitoring is justified when Grok research influences a real buying decision, when inaccurate answers create legal risk or when the X conversation moves faster than a monthly check.
Canlah AI is a Singapore-based SEO + GEO agency that measures and improves brand visibility inside ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode, reporting AI visibility as re-verifiable ranges with timestamped evidence. Its GEO service is priced per AI platform: Starter from $1,500 a month (ChatGPT, 4 buyer questions), Growth from $3,000 a month (adds Google AI Overviews, 8 buyer questions) and Full customised (adds Google AI Mode and Gemini, 16 buyer questions), each re-measured monthly, and it offers a free AI visibility report within 48 hours.
Canlah AI’s limitation is the one that matters on this page. Grok is not part of standard tracking as of September 23, 2026, so Canlah AI does not probe Grok on a retainer, and a brand whose category lives on X should buy one of the six platforms above. Canlah AI’s September 7, 2026 self-audit also sampled OpenAI and Gemini at the API layer rather than a consumer interface: 39 of 39 branded questions returned a mention while only 7 of 177 open buyer questions did.
Best for: brands that need ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode evidence, with a manual Grok panel run alongside. What to verify: how many buyer intents your tier locks, and which tool will cover Grok, since it is not part of standard tracking. Public source: Canlah AI pricing, reviewed September 23, 2026.
Do not choose a tool or an agency from this guide alone. Ask each shortlisted vendor to rerun your own frozen Grok panel in front of you, with prompts, modes, dates, answers and the full citation list visible, and compare it against your own spreadsheet before you sign.
Frequently asked questions
What is Grok SEO and how do I rank on Grok?
Grok SEO is the work of being retrievable on Grok’s three retrieval surfaces: Web Search, X Search and DeepSearch. Make the website fetchable and write sections whose first 60 words answer a buyer question with exact figures, so Web Search can quote them. Then hold an X account that posts in your category and earn mentions in other accounts’ threads, because X Search filters by handle and can fetch whole conversations.
What is Grok WebSearch and how is it different from DeepSearch?
Grok Web Search searches and browses live web pages at answer time, scoped by up to five allowed or excluded domains. DeepSearch is the consumer research mode that runs several passes over both the web and X, cross-references them and writes a longer answer. Web Search is one retrieval step; DeepSearch is a loop that uses it repeatedly beside X Search.
Can I block or allow Grok’s crawler in robots.txt?
No. An xAI crawler reference comparable to OpenAI’s was not found on September 23, 2026, and the community list of 175 AI user agents checked that day contained no xAI or Grok agent, so there is no documented name to write a rule against. Manage Grok access through your general robots.txt rules and your CDN’s AI-bot settings, and confirm current behaviour with xAI directly.
Do X posts really affect what Grok says about my brand?
X posts are a documented and separately billed source for Grok, at $5 per 1,000 posts fetched, and X Search supports keyword, semantic, user and thread retrieval. Profound states that its Grok implementation analyses how posts influence responses. No public study quantifies how often a post outweighs a web page, so treat the X layer as material rather than proven decisive.
How much does it cost to track Grok visibility?
Published entry points for Grok tracking run from $20 a month on Rankscale AI, through $95 on Promptwatch and Peec AI, to $295 on AthenaHQ, as reviewed on September 23, 2026. Profound and Scrunch AI place Grok on enterprise contracts, and Peec AI lists Grok as an upgrade model rather than one of its default six, so confirm the tier and the added cost before comparing headline prices.
Does Canlah AI track Grok?
No. As of September 23, 2026, Canlah AI’s standard tracking covers ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode by tier (Starter covers ChatGPT, Growth adds Google AI Overviews, Full adds Google AI Mode and Gemini), and Grok sits outside that list. A brand that needs Grok evidence should use a platform that documents Grok coverage, such as Rankscale AI, AthenaHQ or Profound.
Method and sources
This guide was written on September 23, 2026. Grok tool behaviour, parameters, billing and citation defaults come from xAI’s own developer documentation, the only first-party source that describes them. Platform coverage and prices were read from vendor pricing pages the same day, without paid accounts or testing of any dashboard. The Canlah AI self-audit figures are API-layer samples from September 7, 2026: one brand, one category, one day.
