How to Get Cited by Perplexity AI: 7-Step Playbook

Seven steps to becoming a source Perplexity cites — starting with whether PerplexityBot can reach you at all. What we changed on our own site, and what moved.

Short answer: to get cited by Perplexity, make sure PerplexityBot can actually fetch your pages, then give it something quotable — a direct answer in the first lines, concrete numbers with sources, and recency it can verify. The seven steps below are in the order that matters: crawlability first, because everything after it is wasted if the crawler never arrives.

Perplexity has become a go-to answer engine for millions of users who want sourced, citation-backed answers instead of a list of links. Unlike ChatGPT, Perplexity shows its sources prominently — which means being one of those cited sources is a direct path to visibility and referral traffic.

This guide explains how Perplexity picks its sources, why it matters for your brand, and what you can do to become one.

How Perplexity Chooses Its Sources

Perplexity runs a live search for each query, retrieves candidate pages, and synthesizes an answer that cites a handful of them. It favors pages that are recent, directly answer the query, and come from sources it considers trustworthy. Community sources like Reddit carry notable weight in its citations. ChatGPT works differently, which is why a brand can be visible in one engine and completely absent from ChatGPT answers.

Understanding this selection process is the first step to being selected. Here is how Perplexity compares to other major AI answer engines:

Platform How It Sources Answers Citation Style
Perplexity Live web search + retrieval Always cites sources with links
ChatGPT Web search (when enabled) Cites from a wider range of sources
Google AI Overviews Summarizes top-ranking pages Strong correlation with rankings
Gemini Google index + Knowledge Graph Pulls from Google's ecosystem

Why Being Cited Matters

When Perplexity cites your page, your brand appears right next to the answer, and users can click through to you. Being absent means a competitor gets that spot. Because Perplexity users are often in research or buying mode, these citations can be high-intent traffic.

AI answer engines are reshaping how users discover brands. AI Overviews now appear in 38% of Singapore search results (We Are Social, Digital 2026 Singapore), and a brand cited inside the answer is read before any link below it. We covered that shift in detail in how AI Overviews are changing search in 2026. Unlike traditional search results — where users scroll past links — AI citations place your brand directly inside the answer itself.

Step 0: Check That PerplexityBot Can Reach You

Perplexity fetches pages with two agents: PerplexityBot, which crawls for the index, and Perplexity-User, which fetches a page when a user's question sends it there. If either is disallowed in your robots.txt, or blocked by a CDN bot rule, your site is not a candidate for citation and no amount of content work changes that. This is the most common cause we find, and it takes two minutes to rule out.

How to check: open yourdomain.com/robots.txt and look for a group naming PerplexityBot. No group is usually fine — a group with Disallow: / is not. Then check your CDN: Cloudflare, Akamai and Fastly all ship AI-crawler blocking that is enabled separately from robots.txt, so a clean robots file can still sit behind a closed door. For reference, our own policy is public at canlah.ai/robots.txt, where every answer-engine agent is named and allowed explicitly rather than left to a wildcard.

One thing we do not recommend spending time on: llms.txt. No major answer engine has confirmed using it, and publishing one is not a citation lever — it is a cheap file to add, not a reason you will be cited.

How to Become a Cited Source

Getting cited by Perplexity comes down to making your content easy to retrieve and easy to quote — the same groundwork that generative engine optimization covers across every answer engine. Here are the key steps:

For a broader perspective, see NeuralAdX’s analysis of what makes a source citation-worthy to an AI answer engine.

1. Answer the question directly and early

Perplexity extracts passages that directly address the query. Lead each section with a clear answer in 40–60 words, then expand with supporting detail. If your content buries the answer three paragraphs in, the AI is less likely to extract it.

2. Keep your facts current

Perplexity favors fresh sources. Display a visible "last updated" date, refresh statistics quarterly, and remove outdated information. Content that hasn't been touched in two years signals staleness to both traditional search and AI retrieval systems.

3. Add structured data

Make your page machine-readable with schema.org structured data. FAQPage, HowTo, and Article markup help AI systems parse your content and understand what it covers. We have not measured an uplift figure for schema on its own and do not publish one; treat structured data as making a page easier to parse, not as a quantified ranking lever. The peer-reviewed GEO study (KDD 2024) found the effects that are measurable come from statistics, quotations and cited sources — up to 41% on position-adjusted word count.

4. Build a genuine community presence

Community sources like Reddit carry notable weight in Perplexity's citations. Participate authentically in communities where your audience asks questions — without spamming. Real discussions about your brand on third-party platforms are a strong signal that AI engines pick up.

5. Make content easy to quote

Use comparison tables for "X vs Y" queries, numbered lists for processes, and definition blocks for "what is" queries. Each paragraph should convey one clear idea that works as a standalone statement. AI systems extract passages, not pages — so every key claim should be self-contained.

Measuring Your AI Visibility

The simplest way to measure is to ask Perplexity the questions your customers ask, and see whether your brand comes up. Track this monthly across your top 10–20 queries. Record whether you're cited, who is cited instead, and which pages get referenced.

For a more structured approach, tools like Otterly AI and Peec AI track brand citation rates across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews. But a manual monthly check is enough to start — the key is consistency and tracking trends over time. If you want a documented starting point, an evidence-based AI visibility audit records which engines cite you today and who takes your place when they don't.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does Perplexity choose which sources to cite?

Perplexity runs a live web search for each query, retrieves candidate pages, and synthesizes an answer citing a handful of them. It favors pages that are recent, directly answer the query, and come from trustworthy sources. Community platforms like Reddit also carry notable weight.

Can I get cited by Perplexity without ranking on Google?

Yes. Unlike Google AI Overviews, which correlate strongly with traditional rankings, Perplexity draws from a wider range of sources. A well-structured page that directly answers a query can get cited even if it doesn't rank on page one of Google.

Does structured data help with Perplexity citations?

Yes, but not by a number anyone should quote. Schema markup like FAQPage and HowTo helps AI systems parse your content and understand what it covers. We have not measured an uplift percentage for schema on its own and will not publish one; the effects that peer-reviewed work does quantify (KDD 2024) come from adding statistics, quotations and cited sources — up to 41% on position-adjusted word count.

How do I check if my brand is cited by Perplexity?

Ask Perplexity the questions your customers ask and see if your brand appears in the answer. Track this monthly across your top queries, recording whether you're cited and who appears instead. This manual check is the simplest way to monitor your AI visibility.
