What is the difference between AEO and GEO?

CANLAH AI defines AEO as optimising for a single extracted answer and GEO as optimising for inclusion in a synthesised answer that cites several sources. The deliverables genuinely differ only where a scope contains off-domain corroboration, repeated sampling, or machine-readable product data; otherwise the two briefs describe identical work.

01 — WHAT THE TERMS MEAN

What do AEO and GEO actually stand for?

AEO stands for answer engine optimisation. GEO stands for generative engine optimisation. Both labels describe work aimed at systems that answer a question rather than return a list of links. The definitions below are the ones CANLAH AI works to; other suppliers attach the same acronyms to different scopes, which is where most of the confusion starts.

AEO: answer engine optimisation

AEO is the practice of making one passage on one page easy for a machine to lift and present as the answer. The surface might be a featured snippet, a People Also Ask expansion, a voice reply, or the extracted portion of an AI Overview. The defining property is extraction: one source, one span of text, reproduced more or less verbatim. Optimisation targets are local to the page — how the question is phrased, how close the answer sits to it, and whether the answer sentence still makes sense once cut out of its surrounding context.

GEO: generative engine optimisation

GEO is the practice of making a brand likely to be named, described correctly, and cited inside an answer the model composes rather than copies. The surface is ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot, Google AI Mode, or the synthesised layer of an AI Overview. The defining property is synthesis: many sources recombined, with attribution attached to whichever documents supported the assertions. Optimisation targets are distributed rather than local — whether the entity is unambiguous, whether independent sources corroborate the claims, and whether the claims are attributable to anything at all.

02 — WHERE THE ACRONYMS CAME FROM

Why does the market use both AEO and GEO?

Each term describes a real craft from a particular period, and the period explains the assumptions still baked into briefs written today. Naming the origin is the quickest way to see which assumptions survived the move to generated answers.

AEO was named in the featured-snippet years

The phrase comes from a period when a results page carried a single slot above the organic list, filled by one extracted passage from one URL. Winning it was a well-understood craft: put the question in a heading, answer it immediately underneath, keep the answer short enough to be taken whole, use a list or a table when the query implied one. Agencies that built their practice then still say AEO, because what they optimised for was an answer rather than a ranking.

The voice-assistant detour

Smart speakers hardened a winner-takes-all assumption. A spoken result has no room for a shortlist, so the discipline organised itself around being the sole source read aloud, and produced guidance on sentence length and speakable markup tuned to one response. That is the part of the inheritance that aged worst. Generative interfaces are visual, multi-source and conversational, and routinely name several vendors in a single paragraph.

GEO arrived with the language models

GEO was named once assistants began composing answers out of retrieved documents. Teams that write AEO in a brief are usually teams that ran snippet programmes and have noticed the same queries now returning composed answers. They are not behind; they are asking whether the old lever still exists. The honest reply separates the formatting half of the old playbook, which survived, from the winner-takes-all half, which did not.

03 — WHY THE LIST KEEPS GROWING

Why do new acronyms keep appearing for the same work?

AEO, GEO, AIO, LLMO, AI SEO, answer optimisation. This category has produced more names than methods. The acronym on the cover mostly records when the supplier wrote their positioning.

New names are cheap; new methods are not

A vocabulary term costs nothing to launch and immediately signals novelty. A genuinely new method costs research, tooling and repeated measurement before anyone can defend it. Where buyers cannot yet tell those apart, naming is the lower-effort route to differentiation, so it happens first and often. Acronym churn signals a seller's position in the market, not the state of the underlying technique.

Only one thing changed technically

Answers are now assembled from retrieved documents and attributed with citations, so visibility became a question of being retrieved and quoted rather than ranked and clicked. Every acronym in this family names that single shift. When a proposal describes a mechanism that is not retrieval-and-citation, that sentence is worth interrogating, because it is describing something the surfaces do not do.

How to read a proposal that leads with an acronym

Skip the definitions section and go to the deliverables table. If the line items are recognisable — audit, entity work, content production, reporting — the acronym is packaging and can be ignored while comparing on substance. If a line item is genuinely unfamiliar, that is the one to interrogate, and in practice it will concern measurement rather than production. Definitions are free to write; deliverable lists commit somebody to doing something.

04 — THE REAL DIFFERENCE

Where do AEO and GEO genuinely diverge?

Strip the marketing away and one axis separates them: what the target surface does with a source document. The unit of success, the measurement method and the shape of the deliverable all follow from it.

Extraction versus synthesis

An extracting surface selects a source and shows part of it. The work is to be that source and to hold a passage worth showing. A synthesising surface reads several documents, writes new sentences, then attaches citations supporting them. The work is to be one of the documents behind those sentences, and the brand they name. A page can be excellent at one and invisible in the other.

The unit of success changes

Under extraction the unit is a position: one page holds the answer slot, and holding it is binary and observable. Under synthesis there is no slot. Several brands are named in one answer, the order is unstable, and the cited sources often do not match the brands recommended in the prose. Asking what position a brand holds in a generated answer puts a question the surface cannot answer. The workable units are whether the brand is named, described accurately, and how often across repeated asks.

The failure modes are different

AEO fails when a page is unliftable: the answer is buried, hedged across paragraphs, or written so it stops making sense once removed from context. GEO fails for reasons unrelated to the prose — the brand is confusable with a similar entity, the claims sit only on the brand's own domain, or the entity is described inconsistently across the places a model reads. Fixing the first failure does not fix the second.

05 — THE DISCRIMINATOR

How can you tell whether an AEO brief and a GEO brief are different work?

The discriminator is not the acronym on the cover. Put the questions below to a proposed scope, once for the AEO version and once for the GEO version. Identical answers mean identical work with different stationery — acceptable, provided nobody is paying twice for it.

Which surfaces are named?

Ask which surfaces the scope targets, by name. A serious answer says AI Overviews and Google AI Mode, or ChatGPT and Perplexity, and explains why those and not others. An unserious answer says AI search. Naming a surface commits a supplier to a way of checking it, and one who has never checked cannot name a surface without inviting the follow-up. Vagueness here usually means a search scope was relabelled.

What counts as a win, and can it be observed?

An AEO win should be observable in a browser by anyone: the passage appears, or it does not. A GEO win has to be defined statistically, because the surface is not stable enough for one observation to carry weight. If the GEO scope defines success the way the AEO scope does — it appeared once, screenshot attached — the supplier has not understood the surface being sold against.

What leaves the domain?

The sharpest question of the set. AEO work rarely leaves the client's own website: headings, answer passages, internal structure, markup. GEO work that is genuinely different produces artefacts held elsewhere — independent corroboration, entity records, published data, machine-readable descriptions kept by a platform. Run down the line items. If every one is on-site, the scope is AEO whatever it is called, and any premium attached to the newer acronym is buying nothing.

06 — WHEN IT IS THE SAME WORK

When is AEO just GEO with a different invoice header?

Often, and it is worth saying plainly before the exceptions. The overlap is not a detail at the edges; it is the bulk of what any competent supplier does in the first months of either brief.

Making an entity unambiguous. Writing question-shaped headings with self-sufficient answers underneath. Keeping claims specific enough to be attributable. Making the site readable by crawlers that fetch on behalf of an assistant. Getting independent sources to describe the brand consistently. Each serves extraction and synthesis at once, and there is no version of this work where a supplier does it for AEO and then does something different for GEO.

The invoice-header test

Take the deliverable list from a proposal and delete every occurrence of the acronym. Ask whether the list would change if the other acronym were written back in. If nothing changes, the difference was the header. That is not automatically dishonest — the work may be correct — but it should then be sold as one engagement rather than a base tier plus an upgrade. A supplier who cannot point to line items that exist only because of the generative surface has not built a distinct service.

What to do when the answer is the same work

Consolidate rather than walk away. Ask for one scope, one price and one reporting object, and ask the supplier to state on record which items they consider generative-side. A single engagement from a supplier who admits the overlap is usually a better trade than two engagements from one who insists on the distinction but cannot demonstrate it.

07 — WHAT THE MARKET CHARGES

What do Singapore agencies charge for AEO and GEO?

Pricing is where a naming argument turns into money. The published Singapore bands are useful, but only when read for their shape rather than their midpoint.

The published bands

Publicly advertised Singapore SEO and GEO retainers sit at around S$840–4,200 per month, and the tiers labelled GEO cluster at around S$1,600–3,000 per month. Both figures are other agencies' own advertised prices, collected from their public pages; neither is a CANLAH AI quote, and this page publishes no rate of its own. The detail that matters is positional: the GEO cluster sits inside the general band rather than beside it or above it. A separate discipline carrying extra deliverables would price outside the range it claims to have superseded.

What the spread tells you

A wide range on a service with a shared technical core says scope, sampling depth and reporting rigour vary far more between suppliers than the acronym does. Proposals at opposite ends of that band are often not the same product: one is an on-site content retainer, the other includes repeated measurement across engines. The band cannot tell a buyer which is which. Only the deliverable list can.

Using the bands in a negotiation

Ask a supplier quoting inside the GEO cluster to identify which line items account for the difference against their own lower tier, and to price those items separately. If the answer is a different acronym, an updated deck, or the phrase AI-ready, the premium is packaging. If the answer is repeat sampling, entity work off the domain, or machine-readable product data, the premium is buying something the cheaper tier does not contain.

08 — WHEN THE DELIVERABLES REALLY DIFFER

When do AEO and GEO produce genuinely different deliverables?

Genuine divergence shares a characteristic: the output is not a page. A supplier claiming a real distinction should be able to show it in one of the places below, and a buyer can ask to see the evidence before signing.

Repeat sampling becomes a line item

Generated answers are not reproducible, so a single check is an anecdote. Corroboration that lives off the domain

Synthesis rewards claims that more than one independent source will support. That pushes part of the work off the client's website: getting the brand described consistently where the brand has no control, publishing material others can cite, keeping entity records aligned across the sources a model reads. None of it shows up in a rank tracker, and a GEO proposal containing no off-domain work is missing the piece that would have justified the label.

The machine-readable commerce layer

Agent-facing product data has no AEO analogue at all. 09 — MEASUREMENT

How do you measure AEO and GEO differently?

Measurement is where the distinction stops being definitional and starts costing money. The disciplines need different instruments, and an AEO instrument pointed at a GEO outcome produces numbers that look reassuring and mean little.

AEO measurement resembles classic search work

Extraction surfaces are checkable. Open the query, look at the result, record whether the passage was taken and from where. It is repeatable, largely deterministic within a short window, and two people running the same check will usually agree. AEO reporting can therefore borrow the shape of search reporting without much distortion, and it is reasonable to expect deliverables a client can reproduce in a browser.

GEO measurement has to be sampled

What a report on generated answers should contain

A baseline reading taken before work started, the question set published in full so a client can see what was asked, the engines named, the sampling frequency stated, and a re-measurement run the same way at the end. Anything short of that cannot support a before-and-after claim, however confident the summary slide sounds.

10 — THE EVIDENCE STANDARD

How should a claim about how engines choose citations be tested?

Suppliers explain why an engine cites what it cites. Those explanations are testable, and asking how one was tested separates method from folklore. The standard below is the one CANLAH AI's published mechanism work was held to.

What a citation record is

CANLAH AI's seven-engines forensics work rests on 116 citation records. A record is one cited source captured together with the question that produced it, the engine that returned it, and the answer text it supported — not a screenshot, and not a count of links. Keeping those parts together is what makes a record re-checkable: anyone can re-ask the question on the same engine and see whether that kind of source is still pulled. A tally of citations with the questions stripped out cannot be audited by anybody.

From records to mechanism claims

Those records yielded 56 mechanism claims — statements of the form this engine cites this kind of source under these conditions. Each claim points back at specific records rather than at an impression formed while reading answers. That constraint stops the exercise producing plausible narrative. Claims that could not be traced to records were dropped before verification began rather than softened into hedged language.

What adversarial verification changed

The claims then went through deliberate attempts to break them: 53 confirmed, 3 weakened, 0 overturned. Weakened means a claim survived only in a narrower form than first written — true on one engine but not the others, or for one question type. Publishing the weakened ones matters, because a mechanism claim nobody tried to break is not evidence. Ask any supplier what result would have falsified their explanation, and what happened when they looked.

11 — MISCONCEPTIONS

What do buyers get wrong about AEO versus GEO?

The misreadings below account for most of the badly built scopes in this comparison. Each one leads a buyer to purchase something that cannot deliver what it was described as delivering.

Misconception: schema markup is what AEO means

Structured data helps a machine disambiguate an entity and understand what a page is. It does not make a passage the chosen answer, and it never did. FAQ rich results have been retired in Google Search, so FAQ markup no longer buys the slot it was once added for. Answer engines read prose. A scope in which AEO consists of adding markup has confused a supporting signal with the job, and will report technical completion while the answer surface stays as it was.

Misconception: GEO replaced AEO

Extraction did not stop happening; it moved inside the generative surfaces. An AI Overview carries composed sentences and lifted spans in the same block, and assistants still quote a source directly when one source plainly answers the question. Treating AEO as obsolete means abandoning the page-level craft — clear question, immediate answer, self-sufficient sentence — that both surfaces still reward. The relationship is layered rather than sequential.

Misconception: ranking well means being named

Search strength and generative presence are separately measurable, and they come apart. 12 — HOW TO BUY

Should a Singapore business buy AEO or GEO?

Buy neither acronym. Buy a deliverable list that can be audited, with a measurement method attached that a client could run without the supplier. The checks below apply to CANLAH AI as readily as to anyone else.
