Why Is My Website Not Showing in AI Overviews? How to Fix Indexing, Answer Fit and Competitor Gaps
Why your website is not showing in Google AI Overviews: four checks, a free test for each, the fix that follows and what Canlah AI's own AIO sample found.
Quick answer
Canlah AI finds that a website is not showing in Google AI Overviews for one of four reasons, under the diagnostic method used here: the query does not trigger an AI Overview at all, the page is not indexed or not eligible for a snippet, no passage on the page answers the sub-question Google is filling, or the pages Google cites for the query belong to competitors and never mention you. Each reason has a separate test, and the fix for one does nothing for the others.
Canlah AI runs this diagnosis for Google AI Overviews as part of its managed service and publishes the manual version here so any team can run it for free. In its own self-audit of canlah.ai on September 7, 2026, the constraint was the fourth reason: canlah.ai was cited in 10 of 11 AI Overviews on branded questions and in none of 51 on open buyer questions.
Treat the result as directional. One run cannot prove stable share of voice, causation or future citations. If the diagnosis reveals an important gap, freeze a panel of buyer questions and repeat it by market, device and language before deciding what to change.
Disclosure: Canlah AI publishes this guide and operates the free and paid checks described below. Details for Google Search Central, Search Console, SE Ranking, Seobility, Semrush, Ahrefs and ZipTie come from their public pages, reviewed on September 23, 2026, and were not tested through paid accounts. The Canlah AI figures come from a self-audit of canlah.ai run on September 7, 2026.
What does “showing in AI Overviews” actually mean?
Showing in AI Overviews is not one outcome. A website can be cited without being named, named without a link, or visible only when the searcher typed the brand. Each is a different failure.
- Trigger: whether Google shows an AI Overview for the query at all.
- Citation: whether one of your URLs sits among the supporting links, and which sentence of the summary it supports.
- Mention: whether the summary names your brand, product or service in its text.
- Position: whether your link is in the first visible set or only behind “Show more”.
- Accuracy: whether your prices, locations and capabilities are described correctly.
- Query type: whether the searcher named you or asked an open question such as “best accounting software for small clinics in Singapore”.
The last line matters most. A website that is cited on branded queries and absent on open ones does not have an indexing problem. Google already trusts the page enough to use it. It has a competitor-gap problem on the queries that decide a shortlist.
Why a website is not showing in AI Overviews: four checks
Google’s AI features page states that there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. It also states that AI Overviews may use a “query fan-out” technique, issuing several related searches across subtopics before writing a response. That gives four places a website can drop out.
- Trigger: Google’s page says AI Overviews are shown only when its systems judge them additive to classic Search, and that they often do not trigger. If the query shows no overview, nobody is cited.
- Indexing and snippet eligibility: To be a supporting link, a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet. A noindex tag, a nosnippet rule, a tight max-snippet value or a blocked Googlebot removes it.
- Answer fit: The page is eligible, but no passage on it answers the specific sub-question the fan-out searched for, in text Google can quote.
- Competitor and source gaps: The pages Google already ranks and cites for the query are competitor pages, “best X in Y” listicles, directories, forums and videos, and none of them mention you.
The first check is about the query, the next two are on-site and fixable in weeks, and the fourth is off-site and slower. In Canlah AI’s own data, the fourth explained why a fully indexed website was still absent.
How to diagnose why your content is not showing in AI Overviews
Run the steps in order. Each one either clears a cause or shows it is the constraint.
Step 1: Build a query panel and check whether an overview appears
Write eight to twelve queries a buyer types before they know your name, plus two or three branded queries in a separate column. Search each one logged out in your target market, on desktop and mobile. Record whether an AI Overview appears, every supporting link and every brand its text names.
Mark any query with no overview as “no trigger” and set it aside as ordinary SEO work. Report the rest as frequencies, such as “cited in 1 of 3 checks”, because the same query can produce a different overview an hour later.
Step 2: Confirm the page is indexed and eligible for a snippet
For each query that shows an overview, find the page on your site that should answer it and paste its URL into the URL Inspection tool in Google Search Console. Check that the page is indexed, that Google chose it as canonical and that the crawled HTML contains the answer text.
Then look for the preview controls Google’s page lists: nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex. A max-snippet of zero or a data-nosnippet wrapper around your key paragraph removes that text from AI features. Check robots.txt and any CDN rule for Googlebot. Google-Extended is a separate token for training and grounding in some of Google’s other systems, not the control for Search.
Step 3: Test whether the page fits the answer Google is writing
Split the AI Overview for the query into its sub-questions: definition, cost, how to choose, named options and risks. Then read the first 60 words under each matching heading on your page. If no passage states a direct answer with one verifiable fact, such as a price range, a credential or a count, the page is hard to cite even when indexed.
Also check that the answer is in the HTML rather than in an image, a tab loaded by JavaScript or a PDF. Google’s page asks site owners to make important content available in textual form and to keep structured data consistent with visible text.
Step 4: Compare your pages with the ones Google cites instead
List every supporting link from Step 1 on open queries and group them by type: competitor service pages, listicles, directories, review sites, Reddit and other forums, YouTube and media. Then check which of those pages mention you. This list answers “competitors in AI Overview but not me”: it names the pages Google paraphrases for your category.
For each cited competitor page, note what it contains that yours does not: often a direct first-paragraph answer, a local price range or a comparison table.
The AI Overviews diagnosis framework at a glance
Four reasons a website is not showing in AI Overviews, with a free test and the decision each result supports. Reviewed September 23, 2026.
| Check | How to test it | Free tool | What a failure looks like | Fix it points to |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 Trigger | Search each panel query logged out, desktop and mobile, in the target market | Browser, SE Ranking free AI Overviews check | No overview appears for the query | Treat as classic SEO; move effort to queries that do trigger |
| 2 Indexing and snippet eligibility | Inspect the answering URL; read robots.txt, meta robots and preview controls | Google Search Console URL Inspection | Not indexed, wrong canonical, nosnippet or max-snippet set, Googlebot challenged | Allow Googlebot, remove noindex or snippet limits, request recrawl |
| 3 Answer fit | Split the overview into sub-questions; read the first 60 words under each matching heading | Browser, view-source, Rich Results Test | Slogans, answer in images or scripts, structured data that contradicts visible text | Answer-first passages with one verifiable fact per sub-question |
| 4 Competitor and source gaps | List every supporting link on open queries; check which mention you | Your panel sheet, Semrush free AI Visibility Checker | Cited listicles, directories and competitor pages name others, not you | Earn inclusion on the specific pages already cited; publish the comparison page missing from the cited set |
Source: Google Search Central and the vendor pages listed under Method and sources, reviewed September 23, 2026. Free tools are named for the test they support, not ranked, and no free checker replaces a panel whose queries, market and run count you control.
“Not found on the reviewed page” means the vendor’s public materials did not name that capability when reviewed on September 23, 2026. It is not proof that the capability is absent.
What Canlah AI’s own AI Overviews sample showed
Canlah AI ran its buyer-funnel audit on canlah.ai on September 7, 2026, with the pipeline it runs for clients. The Google leg rendered real result pages for the Singapore market in English, two runs per question. Of 70 requests, 65 returned a page and 62 of those showed an AI Overview, so the trigger check was cleared.
The indexing check was also cleared: 80 of 80 crawled pages were indexable and Googlebot was not blocked. On branded questions, such as how Canlah AI’s pricing works, canlah.ai was cited in 10 of 11 AI Overviews, a 90.9% citation rate.
The fourth check was the constraint. Across 51 AI Overviews on open buyer questions, such as “Who are the best AI search optimization agency providers in Singapore right now”, canlah.ai was cited in none, a 0.0% citation rate. Those 51 overviews cited 98 distinct domains, led by mediaplus.com.sg (in 23 of 51), aistudio.com.sg (20) and stridec.com (19).
A fully indexed website is necessary for AI Overviews but not sufficient. These figures come from rendered-page sampling on one date in one market. Search Console was not connected, so impression data could not confirm them.
How to fix each cause, in order of effort
Fix the causes in the order the diagnosis found them. A fix aimed at the wrong cause changes nothing in the overview.
Fix trigger problems by choosing different queries
You cannot make Google show an AI Overview. Keep no-trigger queries in your classic SEO plan, move AI Overviews effort to longer, question-shaped queries in the same topic and recheck monthly.
Fix indexing and snippet eligibility in days
Remove any noindex, nosnippet or restrictive max-snippet setting from pages you want cited, and unwrap data-nosnippet from answer paragraphs. Allow Googlebot in robots.txt and any CDN bot rule, then request a recrawl through URL Inspection. Google’s page notes that recrawling can take several days to several months.
Fix answer fit in two to four weeks
Rewrite each commercial page so the first paragraph states what you do, for whom, where and one verifiable fact in roughly 40 to 60 words. Add sections that answer the sub-questions from Step 3 in the phrasing buyers type, and keep the text in HTML.
Fix competitor and source gaps over three to six months
Start from the cited-link list in Step 4, not a generic outreach plan. Request inclusion on listicles that accept submissions, complete the directory and Business Profile listings Google already cites, publish a clear comparison page and join relevant forums under a disclosed identity. Do not buy undisclosed placements or post fake reviews.
Which tools show AI Overview presence
A panel sheet and a browser are enough for a first diagnosis. Each scope below comes from the vendor’s public page, reviewed on September 23, 2026.
Google Search Console. Best for: proving the answering URL is indexed and counting how often it appears in Search. What to verify: Google’s page says AI Overviews and AI Mode appearances are counted in the Performance report within the “Web” search type; a separate AI Overviews filter was not found on the reviewed page.
SE Ranking. Best for: a free check of five keywords on desktop or mobile, without a paid account. What to verify: its AI Overviews Tracker page lists AI Mode and other engines as separate paid trackers, so confirm the free scope.
Seobility. Best for: seeing which tracked keywords Google shows an AI Overview for. What to verify: the AI Overview Tracker page offers a 14-day free trial, so confirm the keyword limit and the rate after it ends.
Semrush. Best for: teams already running SEO in Semrush who want AI visibility beside existing rank tracking. What to verify: the site lists a free AI Visibility Checker; the query volume behind the paid tiers was not found on the reviewed page.
Ahrefs. Best for: brand-level visibility across large language models, measured on Ahrefs’ own web index. What to verify: the Brand Radar page describes an index-based estimate, so confirm how it differs from a rendered result page.
ZipTie. Best for: watching seven engines at once, including Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, ChatGPT and Perplexity. What to verify: the engine list on ziptie.ai is public positioning, so confirm run frequency and citation export.
Canlah AI. Best for: archiving each rendered overview with its timestamp and supporting links inside a fixed buyer-query panel. What to verify: the panel is fixed by hand, so a buyer question nobody on the team wrote down is never measured.
How to interpret five common results
No overview on most queries. The panel may be built from short head terms. Rewrite it as the full questions buyers ask, then recheck.
Cited on branded queries only. This is the most common pattern and matches Canlah AI’s own result. Google trusts the site but does not connect it with the category, so work on Step 4 sources before rewriting more pages.
Cited but not named. Google used your page as evidence but did not credit your brand. Check whether the cited passage states your brand name next to the fact, not only in the header.
Named but described inaccurately. Prioritise correction over exposure. Align the site, structured data, Business Profile and directories around one approved fact sheet, then monitor the query that produced the error.
Visible in AI Overviews but absent in ChatGPT. The engines retrieve differently, so diagnose each one separately before treating a single result as your AI visibility.
What this diagnosis cannot prove
- It cannot prove that a single fix caused a later citation, because Google’s index, its models and competitor pages change at the same time.
- It cannot guarantee that a page cited in one run will be cited in the next, or that an overview will keep triggering for the query.
When to move from a self-diagnosis to a managed program
A small local business can often run this diagnosis monthly in a spreadsheet and fix the first three causes without help. Paid work becomes worth considering when the fourth cause is the constraint, when several markets or languages are involved, or when inaccurate overviews carry legal or reputational risk.
Canlah AI is a Singapore-based SEO + GEO agency that measures and improves brand visibility inside ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode, reporting AI visibility as re-verifiable ranges with timestamped evidence. Canlah AI’s pricing page offers a free 48-hour AI visibility snapshot before any quote, and every tier covers the same engines, including Google AI Overviews.
The limitation is visible in Canlah AI’s own data: a 0.0% citation rate in open-question AI Overviews on its own site shows that off-site evidence takes months to build, and no provider can shorten that by promising a citation. Before choosing any provider, ask it to rerun your own panel in front of you and show the rendered overviews and supporting links. Verify the diagnosis against your own evidence rather than trusting a composite score.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my website not showing in AI Overviews?
A website is usually missing from AI Overviews because the query does not trigger an overview, the page is not indexed or not eligible for a snippet, no passage answers the sub-question Google is filling, or the pages Google cites for the query mention competitors and not you. Test the four causes in that order, because each needs a different fix.
Why are my competitors in the AI Overview but not me?
Google AI Overviews paraphrase and link the pages Google already retrieves for the query, which are often competitor pages, listicles, directories and forums. If competitors appear on those pages and you do not, Google has evidence for them and none for you. List the supporting links on your own panel queries to see exactly which pages are doing this.
Do I need special schema or an llms.txt file to appear in AI Overviews?
No. Google’s AI features page says there are no additional technical requirements, no special schema.org structured data and no AI text files needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. A page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet, and any structured data should match the visible text.
Can Canlah AI guarantee that my website will appear in Google AI Overviews?
No. Canlah AI can guarantee the measurement, the sampling protocol and the work delivered, but it cannot control whether Google triggers an overview or which pages it cites. Treat any guarantee of an AI Overviews citation as a warning sign rather than a selling point.
How long does it take to show in AI Overviews after fixing my website?
Indexing, snippet and answer-fit fixes depend on recrawling, which Google’s page says can take several days to several months. Competitor and source gaps take three to six months or longer, because other sites have to publish before Google can cite them.
