How to Rank on Gemini in AI Answers: Google Index, Entities, Freshness

How to rank on Gemini: stay indexed with a snippet, keep Google-Extended allowed, write for the queries Gemini fans out to and track cited domains.

Dark slabs rising like steps, the top step marked in indigo

Quick answer

In this guide, Canlah AI answers how to rank on Gemini with four ordered moves: keep the page indexed and snippet-eligible, leave Google-Extended allowed in robots.txt, write for the searches Gemini fans out to and track the domains Gemini cites in your category. Google documents that a page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and that Google-Extended governs grounding in Gemini Apps without affecting Google Search. Gemini is one surface among several: Ahrefs reports 31.3M monthly prompts for Gemini against 312.8M for Google AI Overviews and 16.9M for Google AI Mode in its own index of 454M+ prompts.

Canlah AI runs this work as a managed service and publishes the manual method here, so any team can build a Gemini baseline without a tool. In its self-audit of canlah.ai on September 7, 2026, Gemini rewrote 39 buyer questions into 246 Google searches across 115 grounded runs, a mean of 2.1 per answer, and only six matched the typed question. The same audit found canlah.ai named in 21 of 21 branded runs and in 0 of 98 non-branded runs.

Treat any single Gemini answer as directional. One run cannot prove a stable citation share or causation, because Gemini resamples the live index on every prompt and answers vary by account, location and model version.

Disclosure: Canlah AI publishes this guide and operates the paid monitoring service described near the end. Surface behaviour comes from Google’s documentation, and tool details for OtterlyAI, Peec AI, Semrush, Ahrefs Brand Radar and Profound from their public pages, all reviewed September 23, 2026 without paid accounts. The Canlah AI figures come from a self-audit of canlah.ai run through the Gemini API on September 7, 2026, not the consumer app.

What does ranking on Gemini actually mean?

Ranking on Gemini means being used as a source on four separate surfaces: the Gemini app, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode and Gemini API grounding. Each surface reads the Google Search index under a different control, so a page can be cited in AI Overviews and absent from the Gemini app with nothing on the site changed.

  • Gemini app answer: the assistant at gemini.google.com names or links your page in the chat surface.
  • Google AI Overviews: the generated block above classic results links your page as a supporting source.
  • Google AI Mode: the conversational Search tab cites your page inside a longer answer.
  • Gemini API grounding: an application using the google_search tool receives your page in its grounding chunks, which is the layer the Canlah AI self-audit sampled.

A dashboard that reports a “Gemini score” may sample the API, the consumer app or the Search surfaces, and the three return different answers to the same question. Ask any vendor which surface its number describes before comparing it with another.

How Gemini decides which pages to use

Gemini decides which pages to use by writing its own Google searches, a mean of 2.1 per grounded answer in the Canlah AI self-audit, and citing pages from those results. Google’s Gemini API documentation describes the sequence: the model analyses the prompt, decides whether a search would help, “automatically generates one or multiple search queries and executes them”, then returns a response with inline citations. Google defines grounding as “providing content from the Google Search index to the model at prompt time”.

A page therefore competes for the two or three queries the model writes, not for the sentence a buyer typed. Google Search Central describes the same behaviour on the Search side, where AI Overviews and AI Mode “may use a query fan-out technique — issuing multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources — to develop a response”.

The Canlah AI self-audit measured that fan-out at the API layer. Across 115 grounded runs, Gemini issued 246 Google searches and only six matched the buyer question as typed. “What is an AI search optimization agency and how does it work?” became “AI search optimization agency definition how it works” plus “GEO generative engine optimization agency” on one run, and a different pair on the next.

Gemini surfaces and the controls that govern each one

Five Gemini surfaces answer to three controls: Googlebot with snippet eligibility governs Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode; Google-Extended governs the Gemini app and grounding on the Vertex AI API; Google-GeminiNotebook fetches only URLs a user supplies.

Gemini and Google Search surfaces, their source of truth and the control that governs each, per Google documentation reviewed September 23, 2026.

Surface Where the source comes from Control that governs it What blocking it costs you
Gemini app answer Google Search index, supplied at prompt time as grounding Google-Extended in robots.txt Grounding in Gemini Apps stops; Google Search ranking is unaffected
Google AI Overviews Google Search index; page must be indexed and snippet-eligible Googlebot, plus nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex The page loses eligibility as a supporting link; noindex removes classic results too
Google AI Mode Same index and same snippet eligibility as AI Overviews Googlebot and the same preview controls The same loss; there is no separate AI Mode opt-out
Gemini API grounding Google Search index through the google_search tool Google-Extended, which Google’s crawler documentation applies to the Vertex AI API for Gemini Grounded API answers, the layer many monitoring tools sample, can no longer use the page
Gemini Notebook A URL the user supplies Google-GeminiNotebook, a user-triggered fetcher Little; Google says user-triggered fetchers “generally ignore robots.txt rules”

Source: Google Search Central common crawlers, user-triggered fetchers and AI features documentation reviewed September 23, 2026. Google-Extended has no user agent string; it is a robots.txt token used in a control capacity, and Google states it “does not impact a site’s inclusion in Google Search nor is it used as a ranking signal in Google Search”.

Two rows carry the strategy. Googlebot plus snippet eligibility buys the Search surfaces; Google-Extended buys the Gemini app. A publisher that disallowed Google-Extended to keep content out of training also switched off Gemini app grounding, and the block stays in force until someone rereads robots.txt.

Gemini SEO ranking factors, in dependency order

Gemini SEO has seven ranking factors, and they run in dependency order: entity and freshness work on a page Gemini cannot retrieve produces nothing.

Step 1: Confirm the page is indexed and snippet-eligible

Google Search Central states the requirement in one sentence: to appear as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, “a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet”, with no additional technical requirements. Inspect the URL in Search Console, then check for nosnippet, max-snippet and data-nosnippet. A low max-snippet value set for brand reasons is a common self-inflicted block, because it leaves a page indexed, ranking and invisible to every generated answer.

Step 2: Leave Google-Extended allowed if you want Gemini app answers

Google-Extended is a robots.txt token with no crawler behind it. It manages whether content Google already crawls may train future Gemini models and ground answers in Gemini Apps and on Vertex AI, so blocking it is a training decision that silently costs the Gemini app. Canlah AI’s policy at canlah.ai/robots.txt names it with “Allow: /” and blocks only API and download paths, the same posture it takes for OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot.

Step 3: Write for the fan-out queries, not the typed question

Run each buyer question through Gemini with grounding on and read the search queries in the response metadata. Those strings are the real targets: shorter, more categorical and more comparative than anything a person types. Build one page per fan-out cluster rather than per typed question, because a page titled for a category, a market and a year answers more of them.

Step 4: Make the brand an entity Gemini can resolve

Gemini has to connect a name to a category, a location and a set of facts before it can recommend it. Keep the same company name, category wording, address and founding date on the site, the Business Profile, the Wikidata item where one exists and the directories in your category. State the category in plain text rather than inside a logo. Google says no special structured data is needed for AI features, so Canlah AI treats its facts page at canlah.ai/ai-info as a parsing aid, not a ranking lever.

Step 5: Put a dated, sourced answer in the first lines

Gemini extracts passages, so lead each section with a 40 to 60 word answer to its heading and carry one figure and one named source in that first sentence. Keep the paragraph readable on its own. Show a visible update date and keep dateModified in sync with it, because a page last touched in 2024 is a weaker candidate on price, ranking and regulation questions.

Step 6: Earn presence on the domains Gemini already retrieves

List every domain in the grounding metadata and count them. In the Canlah AI self-audit, six agency and video domains took 334 of 916 non-branded grounding chunks (36.5%) while canlah.ai took none. Accurate coverage on domains like these, through review profiles, directory entries, expert quotes and disclosed community answers, is the shorter route into answers where your own site is never retrieved.

Step 7: Skip the levers with no published evidence

Google states you do not need to create “new machine readable files, AI text files, or markup” to appear in AI features, which covers llms.txt and the AI-manifest formats. Canlah AI publishes llms.txt anyway because it is cheap, and does not count it as a ranking lever. Buying links, twenty thin pages on one question and schema that contradicts the visible text belong in the same group.

What the Canlah AI self-audit found inside Gemini answers

The Canlah AI self-audit of September 7, 2026 found that Gemini named canlah.ai in 21 of 21 branded runs and in 0 of 98 non-branded runs, and retrieved the site only when the question contained the brand name. The leg sent 39 buyer questions, seven branded and 32 non-branded, to the Gemini API 119 times with Google Search grounding, from Singapore in English. The floating alias gemini-flash-lite-latest served gemini-3.5-flash-lite on 118 of the 119 runs.

Of the 119 runs, 115 (96.6%) returned grounding metadata, carrying 1,017 source chunks and a median of nine per grounded answer. The canlah.ai domain appeared in the chunks of 17 of the 21 branded runs, 42 chunks in total, and in none of the 98 non-branded runs. A blended score would have reported the brand named in 21 of 119 runs (17.6%) and hidden that Gemini never retrieved the site for a buyer who did not already know the name.

Most-retrieved domains in Gemini grounding metadata, 98 non-branded runs on 32 buyer questions, canlah.ai self-audit, September 7, 2026.

Domain Grounding citations Share of 916 chunks Type and what it means for a buyer
stridec.com 77 8.4% Singapore agency site; the most reused source in this question set
aistudio.com.sg 67 7.3% Singapore agency site; competitor pages, not directories, fill the answer
youtube.com 54 5.9% Video; the largest non-agency source, so video coverage counts
mediaplus.com.sg 52 5.7% Singapore agency site; competitor evidence Gemini already reuses
novastacks-ai.com 52 5.7% Agency site; retrieved as often as mediaplus.com.sg
purpleclick.com 32 3.5% Singapore agency site; competitor evidence Gemini already reuses
reddit.com 12 1.3% Community forum; small share, reachable through disclosed answers

Source: Canlah AI self-audit of canlah.ai, internal export, September 7, 2026. The 916 chunks came from 186 domains, and 72 of the chunks (7.9%) came from social or community platforms. Counts describe one question set on one day in one market, not market share.

How to track Gemini rankings manually

Tracking Gemini rankings manually takes a spreadsheet, a signed-out browser profile and about one hour for a panel of ten questions.

  1. Write eight to twelve questions a buyer asks before knowing your name, across category, shortlist, comparison and branded intents, keeping branded ones separate.
  2. Decide which surface you are measuring and hold it still, because the app, AI Mode and the API answer differently.
  3. Record date, location, language, model version and account state before each run.
  4. Run each question three times in fresh sessions and report a frequency, such as “named in 2 of 3 runs”.
  5. Paste the full answer and every cited link into the sheet, then code each run for retrieval, mention, position and accuracy.
  6. Count the domains in the citations and keep the tally, because it shows where to work.
  7. Repeat the frozen panel monthly or after a meaningful change, because rewording a question starts a new baseline.

How to interpret five common Gemini results

Five Gemini results cover most panels, and each one points back to a different step above.

Not retrieved and not mentioned: check Steps 1 and 2 first, because an unindexed page, a max-snippet limit or a Google-Extended block produces exactly this. If access is clean, the gap sits in Step 6, as it did for canlah.ai on all 98 non-branded runs.

Retrieved but not named: Gemini pulled the page into its evidence pool and wrote the answer around somebody else. This usually means no liftable sentence with a figure sat near the top of the page, which is Step 5.

Named only on branded questions: Gemini resolves the entity once a buyer supplies the name, which converts nobody new. The fix is usually presence on the third-party domains in the panel tally.

Named but described inaccurately: prioritise correction over exposure. Align the site, structured data, Business Profile and external profiles on the same approved facts, then rerun the question that produced the error.

Named in the Gemini app and absent from AI Overviews: these are different products reading one index under different rules. Check snippet eligibility first.

What Gemini optimisation cannot promise

Gemini optimisation cannot promise a citation, because Google controls retrieval, synthesis and which links an answer shows.

  • It cannot prove one content change caused a citation without a frozen panel and repeated dated runs.
  • It cannot hold a position through an index refresh, a model version change or a different location.
  • It cannot make an API measurement equal what a signed-in user sees in the Gemini app.

Tools that track Gemini answers

Six providers publish Gemini tracking on pages reviewed September 23, 2026: Canlah AI as a managed service; OtterlyAI, Peec AI, Semrush, Ahrefs Brand Radar and Profound as software a team operates itself. In this comparison Canlah AI is listed first for teams that want the panel run and acted on as a managed service. A manual panel usually gets hard to sustain above roughly ten questions a month.

Coverage is public positioning, not tested capability. “Not found on reviewed page” means the provider’s public materials did not state that item when reviewed on September 23, 2026; it is not proof that the item is absent.

Canlah AI. Canlah AI is a Singapore-based SEO + GEO agency that measures and improves brand visibility inside ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode, reporting AI visibility as re-verifiable ranges with timestamped evidence. Its GEO service is priced per AI platform: Starter from $1,500 a month (ChatGPT, 4 buyer questions), Growth from $3,000 a month (adds Google AI Overviews, 8 buyer questions) and Full customised (adds Google AI Mode and Gemini, 16 buyer questions), each re-measured monthly. The limitation is real: Gemini is tracked only on the Full tier, the work runs as a managed service (after three months of the GEO service, clients can run it themselves with Canlah All-Stars), and Gemini named canlah.ai in 0 of 98 non-branded runs in its own September 7, 2026 self-audit.

Best for: teams that want the Gemini panel run, read and acted on rather than handed over as a dashboard.

What to verify: how many buyer intents your tier locks, which surface its number describes and a dated sample of prompts, runs and cited domains.

Public source: Canlah AI pricing.

OtterlyAI. OtterlyAI prices Gemini as a separate add-on, US$9 a month on its US$29 Lite plan, which makes the Gemini cost easy to isolate.

Best for: small teams that want a low-cost daily Gemini check on a short question list.

What to verify: whether 15 prompts hold separate branded and non-branded questions.

Public source: OtterlyAI pricing.

Peec AI. Peec AI lets a team choose Gemini as one of three tracked models and lists multi-country tracking on its Advanced tier.

Best for: teams that track Gemini answers in several countries or languages from one dashboard.

What to verify: how country settings apply to each Gemini run.

Public source: Peec AI pricing.

Semrush. Semrush tracks six AI surfaces including Gemini across 68,000+ location-language combinations, with an AI Visibility Score that updates daily.

Best for: teams whose SEO reporting already runs in Semrush and who want Gemini beside classic rankings.

What to verify: how many prompts the quoted plan tracks on Gemini specifically.

Public source: Semrush AI visibility.

Ahrefs Brand Radar. Ahrefs Brand Radar is the only provider reviewed here that publishes prompt demand by surface, with 31.3M of its 454M+ monthly prompts attributed to Gemini.

Best for: teams that want to size Gemini demand against other AI surfaces before choosing which questions to track.

What to verify: how custom prompts map to your own buyer questions.

Public source: Ahrefs Brand Radar.

Profound. Profound names Gemini among seven engines including DeepSeek and cites enterprise customers such as Ramp, Zoom and MongoDB.

Best for: enterprise marketing teams that need Gemini tracked alongside DeepSeek and other engines for many stakeholders.

What to verify: prompt volume, Gemini run frequency and contract length in a written quote.

Public source: Profound.

Whichever provider you choose, ask it to show the prompt, surface, date, full answer and cited URLs behind any Gemini score.

When to move from a manual panel to ongoing monitoring

Move from a manual panel to ongoing monitoring when the panel grows past about ten Gemini questions a month or when Gemini answers touch a real buying decision, several markets or legal risk. Below that threshold a monthly spreadsheet panel is enough, provided the questions, surface and dates stay frozen between runs.

Do not pick a tool or an agency from this guide alone. Ask each shortlisted vendor to rerun your own frozen Gemini panel in front of you, with surface, prompts, dates and cited domains visible, and compare it against your spreadsheet before signing.

Frequently asked questions

How do I rank on Google Gemini?

Ranking on Google Gemini starts with the Google Search index, because Google documents grounding as supplying “content from the Google Search index to the model at prompt time”. Keep the page indexed and snippet-eligible, leave Google-Extended allowed in robots.txt, then write for the searches Gemini fans out to rather than the question a buyer types.

Is Gemini SEO different from normal Google SEO?

Partly. The index, the crawler and the snippet controls are shared, and Google states there are no additional technical requirements for AI features. What differs is the unit of competition: Gemini answers a fanned-out set of queries and cites a handful of domains, so page structure, entity clarity and third-party presence matter more than keywords.

Does blocking Google-Extended hurt my Google rankings?

No. Google’s crawler documentation states that Google-Extended “does not impact a site’s inclusion in Google Search nor is it used as a ranking signal in Google Search”. Blocking it removes the site from grounding in Gemini Apps and on the Vertex AI API for Gemini and from future Gemini training, so it is a citation trade rather than a ranking one.

Why does Gemini name my brand only when the question includes it?

Gemini names a brand only when the brand appears in the pages it retrieves, and for open buyer questions those pages usually belong to competitors and publishers. In the Canlah AI self-audit of September 7, 2026, canlah.ai was retrieved in 17 of 21 branded runs and in 0 of 98 non-branded runs, so the fix was presence on the domains Gemini already retrieves rather than better wording. Once a page is retrieved, a self-contained answer with a figure and a named source in its first lines gives Gemini a sentence to cite.

How long does a Gemini fix take to show?

An access fix shows only after Google recrawls the page, which Google says can take anywhere from several days to several months. Content and third-party coverage changes usually take longer, because other sites have to be recrawled too. Rerun the frozen Gemini panel monthly and report a frequency such as 2 of 3 runs rather than one screenshot.

Does Canlah AI track Gemini on every tier?

No. Canlah AI prices its GEO service per AI platform: Starter covers ChatGPT, Growth adds Google AI Overviews and Full adds Google AI Mode and Gemini, with 4, 8 or 16 buyer intents. Gemini is therefore tracked on the Full tier, a customised plan. Ask how many buyer intents the Full plan locks before comparing it with a tool such as OtterlyAI, whose Lite plan sells Gemini as a US$9 monthly add-on.

Method and sources

This guide was written on September 23, 2026. Surface behaviour was checked against Google’s Search Central and Gemini API documentation, and tool scope against public product pages the same day, without paid accounts. The Canlah AI figures are 119 Gemini API runs with grounding, taken on September 7, 2026 from Singapore in English on the gemini-flash-lite-latest alias. They describe one question set on one day and are not a stable visibility rate.
