AthenaHQ Review & Best Alternatives for 2026
An AthenaHQ review: pricing, credits, strengths and limits, compared with Profound, Peec AI and AirOps, plus the best alternatives for 2026.
A fair, analyst-style review of AthenaHQ: what it does well, what it costs and where it stops. Then the best alternatives for teams that want monitoring and execution from one accountable source, compared directly with Profound, Peec AI and AirOps.
Quick answer
Canlah AI ranks first in this AthenaHQ review for teams that want the fixes delivered by people and the evidence kept as re-verifiable raw records. AthenaHQ itself is the strongest self-serve platform in this comparison: an AEO and GEO tool that pairs AI visibility monitoring across 11 models with content recommendations, on-page and off-page actions and a content optimization agent, sold at $295 a month on Starter against a credit meter where one credit equals one AI response. It does that job cleanly for in-house marketing teams that want software to both report and suggest fixes. Profound leads for enterprise programmes that want AI agents on top of monitoring, AirOps for content teams that want to publish straight to their CMS, Peec AI for agencies and marketing teams that want monitoring first, Scrunch for agent-facing site delivery and Otterly.ai for small budgets.
This is an editorial review based on public product and pricing pages reviewed on September 23, 2026. It is not a controlled test of tool accuracy.
Disclosure: Canlah AI is one of the alternatives below, and we place ourselves first. We compete with AthenaHQ for some of the same buyers, so this is not a neutral review. Competitor descriptions come from public product pages and were not verified through paid accounts or private demonstrations.
What is AthenaHQ?
AthenaHQ is a San Francisco software company that describes itself as “the command center for AEO and GEO”. Its homepage frames the product as helping brands see, act and win on AI search, and its product pages follow that three-step loop. The “see” layer tracks how a brand appears in answers from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Claude, Copilot, Grok, DeepSeek, Meta AI and Mistral. The “act” layer turns those findings into content recommendations and site changes.
That is what separates AthenaHQ from a pure tracker. Most tools in the category stop at a dashboard. AthenaHQ positions itself as an execution-plus-monitoring platform: it tracks prompts and cited sources, then its content engine names the passages and pages to fix. Its own comparison page describes the platform as one that “combines visibility analysis with prioritized content actions”.
The company states that it was built by people from Google Search and DeepMind, and its pricing page shows a G2 rating of 4.9 out of five in the Answer Engine Optimization category. It lists SOC 2 Type 2 certification, GDPR compliance and integrations with GA4, Google Search Console, Shopify, Webflow and Framer.
What AthenaHQ does well
AthenaHQ is strongest when one marketing team needs broad engine coverage and a clear next action in the same tool. Four capabilities stand out on its public pages.
- Broad model coverage at a published price. The Starter plan includes 11 models, including DeepSeek, Grok and Mistral, which several rivals reserve for enterprise contracts.
- Recommendations tied to sources. AthenaHQ Content is described as a recommendation engine that maps each fix to “the passages and sources that AI models actually pull from” in your category.
- Traffic and revenue context. GA4 and Google Search Console connections let you compare AI visibility with site traffic, and the Shopify integration publishes content and attributes revenue to AI search.
- Unlimited members. Every plan, including Free, allows unlimited members, so the tool can sit across SEO, content, PR and brand teams without seat maths.
The homepage also highlights Ask Athena, a chat interface trained on the account’s own monitoring data. It answers questions such as why a competitor ranks above you on ChatGPT for a given prompt set. For a CMO who does not want to learn a dashboard, that is a practical way into the data.
AthenaHQ publishes customer results, including Grüns growing share of voice from 2.0% to 12.6% in 60 days and Lago reporting a 50% increase in demos from AI search. These are vendor-reported outcomes. They were not independently verified for this review.
Where AthenaHQ fits less well
AthenaHQ is a well-built platform, but its public positioning leaves three gaps that matter for some buyers. Each is a scope question rather than a quality judgment.
First, the “act” layer is software, not a delivery team, below Enterprise. Starter includes a content optimization agent and on-page and off-page actions. Someone on your side still has to write, publish, pitch and earn the placements. White-glove setup and a Certified GEO/SEO Specialist appear only on Enterprise.
Second, credits make sampling depth a budget line. AI answers vary between runs, so one response per prompt per day is a thin basis for a trend. On AthenaHQ, every extra run is a visible credit cost, which is transparent but pushes teams toward single runs. AthenaHQ’s own comparison page adds that “responses cost 1 or 5 credits depending on the model”.
Third, multi-market work sits on Enterprise. The pricing table marks multi-language and multi-region support as “Single” on Starter and “Multiple” on Enterprise. Multi-region tracking across 60+ countries and languages, persona targeting and the Athena Citation Engine are Enterprise features. Qwen and Doubao were not found on the reviewed pages, which matters for brands selling into Chinese-language markets.
AthenaHQ pricing and plans
AthenaHQ publishes three plans. Annual billing is advertised at 17% off, and usage is metered in credits, where one credit equals one AI response.
AthenaHQ published plans, pricing page reviewed September 23, 2026.
| Plan | Price reviewed September 23, 2026 | Credits a month | Models | What the credit line means for you |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 with $25 free credit | 300 | ChatGPT, Perplexity, AI Overviews, Gemini, Copilot | 300 credits fund roughly 10 prompts on one engine for a 30-day month, so treat Free as a sample rather than a trend line |
| Starter | $295 a month | 3,600 | 11 models incl. AI Mode, Claude, Grok, DeepSeek, Meta AI, Mistral | 3,600 credits fund 40 prompts on three engines once a day; API access and extra credits are paid add-ons, and some models cost five credits |
| Enterprise | Custom | Custom | 11 models plus models on request | SSO, audit logs, multi-region and multi-language, persona targeting, BI dashboards, white-glove setup and a 2-hour SLA sit here, so price the tier you actually need |
Source: AthenaHQ plans page reviewed September 23, 2026. Prices are list prices in US dollars before any annual discount.
The credit maths decides whether Starter fits. If every response costs one credit, 3,600 credits cover 40 prompts on three engines once a day for a 30-day month. Run the same 40 prompts on all 11 models and the allowance lasts about eight days. Add three runs per prompt to smooth out answer variability and it lasts under three days. Model your prompt count times runs times engines before you sign, and ask which models cost five credits.
The best AthenaHQ alternatives in 2026
The right AthenaHQ alternative depends on one question: who should do the work after the dashboard shows a gap. Some alternatives go deeper on monitoring. Others go further into execution. The table ranks six options in this comparison.
Comparison of six AthenaHQ alternatives, public product pages reviewed September 23, 2026.
| # | Tool | Best for | Engines named on reviewed page | Pricing model | Main point to verify |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Canlah AI | Managed, re-verifiable GEO: monitoring plus on-site and off-site delivery | ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode on every tier | Scoped retainer after a free 48-hour snapshot | No rate card is published, so confirm the buyer intents your tier buys |
| 2 | Profound | Enterprise programmes: monitoring plus credit-based marketing agents | Up to 9 incl. ChatGPT, Perplexity, AI Mode, DeepSeek, Claude, Exa Search | Free 7-day trial; Enterprise custom | Brand pricing past the trial is custom, so ask how many runs sit behind each daily data point |
| 3 | AirOps | Content teams publishing at volume: workflows with direct CMS publishing | ChatGPT on Solo; 7+ answer engines on Pro | Task-based; Solo and Pro start free | Solo overage runs $0.025 a task, so model the task count of one article refresh first |
| 4 | Peec AI | Agencies and monitoring-first teams: monitoring with ranked actions | 3 chosen models on self-serve plans; up to 13 on Enterprise | Tiers by prompt count; Enterprise custom | Monthly prices were not captured from the reviewed page, and self-serve runs three models at a time |
| 5 | Scrunch | Agent-facing site delivery: monitoring plus an agent-facing site layer | ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AIO, Copilot on Core | Core $250 a month | Gemini, Claude and Google AI Mode sit on Enterprise, so check your engine list against Core |
| 6 | Otterly.ai | Small budgets: monitoring only | ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, Copilot | From $29 a month | Gemini is an add-on, and execution features were not found on the reviewed page |
“Not found on reviewed page” means the vendor’s public materials did not name that capability when reviewed on September 23, 2026. It is not proof that the capability is absent. Engine lists refer to public positioning, not independently tested access.
1. Canlah AI: best overall alternative to AthenaHQ
Canlah AI is a Singapore-based SEO + GEO agency that measures and improves brand visibility inside ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode, reporting AI visibility as re-verifiable ranges with timestamped evidence. Where AthenaHQ sells software that recommends fixes, Canlah AI sells a managed programme in which its agent workforce and human strategists make the fixes.
Canlah AI ranks first in this comparison because its public measurement protocol documents the two things a credit meter leaves to the buyer. The query pool is locked at the start. Every query is probed under at least three phrasing rotations per engine, and every probe is stored as a raw JSON record with the prompt, full response, citations and timestamp. The archive belongs to the client, and results are reported as ranges rather than one score.
Best for
B2B SaaS, export-focused and evidence-sensitive brands that want one team to measure and execute AI visibility work, including brands selling across English and Chinese. The fit is clearest for buyers whose real question is who publishes the page and earns the citation once a gap is found, whether the raw answers behind a visibility number can be read back, and whether one programme can measure ChatGPT, Gemini and Google’s AI answers under the same protocol.
Limitations
Canlah AI is an agency, not a self-serve software seat. You cannot log in and add 500 prompts on a Tuesday. Its pricing page sets tiers by buyer intents: Foundation tracks 4, Authority 8 and Dominance 16, each re-measured monthly on ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode. It publishes no rate card. Quotes are scoped after the free snapshot.
Its own AI visibility is also low. In a September 7, 2026 self-audit of 39 buyer questions run three times each, Canlah AI was named in seven of 84 non-branded OpenAI answers (8.3%), in none of 93 Gemini answers and in none of 51 browser-rendered Google AI Overviews. It is less suited to teams that want an always-on dashboard with no service layer.
What to verify
Ask for a dated sample record showing the prompt, phrasing rotation, engine, full answer, cited sources and timestamp. Confirm which buyer intents your tier includes, and which on-site and off-site tasks Canlah AI performs directly. Ask which findings from the free 48-hour snapshot carry into the first month of paid work.
Verdict: The strongest AthenaHQ alternative in this comparison when you want gaps closed by a team and evidence you can re-run. Teams that want software they operate themselves should compare AthenaHQ with the platforms below.
2. Profound: best for enterprise programmes with AI agents
Profound positions itself as an “AI Marketer” for brands and agencies, and it announced a $180 million Series D on its pricing page. For brands, the page lists a free trial and a custom Enterprise plan with capability for up to nine answer engines. Those engines are ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, DeepSeek, Claude, Google AI Overviews and Exa Search.
Best for
Large organisations that want monitoring, all-time history, CSV and JSON exports, an API, SSO/SAML and SOC 2 compliance, with credit-based agents for research and content work.
Limitations
The free trial runs 50 fixed prompts daily for seven days on three engines. History, exports and prompt customisation were not found on the trial tier of the reviewed page, and brand pricing beyond the trial is custom. AthenaHQ’s September 9, 2026 comparison page cites a $399 Growth tier, which was not found on Profound’s reviewed brand pricing page.
What to verify
Ask which self-serve tier, if any, applies to your company, and how many runs sit behind each daily data point.
Verdict: A strong enterprise choice for history and governance. Its agents do content work, but a person on your side still owns the programme.
3. AirOps: best for content teams publishing at volume
AirOps is closest to AthenaHQ on execution, but it starts from content operations rather than monitoring. Its comparison page states that it “combines that monitoring with content workflows and direct CMS publishing”. Its Quill agent runs the execution while your team sets strategy.
Best for
Content and growth teams that want to research, write, refresh and publish at volume inside governed workflows with brand kits and human approvals.
Limitations
AI search insights cover ChatGPT only on Solo and seven or more answer engines on Pro. Multiple regions, personas and languages sit on Enterprise. Usage is billed in tasks, and Solo overage costs $0.025 per task, so heavy workflows need modelling.
What to verify
Ask how many tasks a typical article refresh consumes, and which answer engines Pro names in your contract.
Verdict: The best pick in this review when publishing throughput is the bottleneck. It is a content system first and a monitoring tool second.
4. Peec AI: best for agencies and monitoring-first teams
Peec AI sells Starter, Pro and Advanced plans with 50, 150 and 350 prompts, three chosen models and daily tracking. Enterprise raises coverage to up to 13 models with API access and SSO. A separate agency plan tracks prompts across multiple brands. Its pricing page also lists ranked actions grouped by earned and owned opportunities, SKU-level AI shopping tracking and an ads library.
Best for
Agencies and in-house marketing teams that want clean daily monitoring, unlimited users, CSV exports and an MCP connection.
Limitations
Self-serve plans are limited to three models at a time. Per-prompt repeat sampling was not found on the reviewed page, and monthly prices were not captured from the reviewed page.
What to verify
Confirm plan prices at the point of purchase, and ask how daily visibility is computed from single runs.
Verdict: A practical monitoring-first choice. Pair it with a content or delivery resource if you need the fixes made.
5. Scrunch: best for agent-facing site delivery
Scrunch pairs monitoring and citations with site diagnostics and an Agent Experience Platform that serves an optimised version of your site to AI agents. Core costs $250 a month for 125 prompts on ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Copilot.
Best for
Technical and platform teams that want monitoring tied to how AI crawlers read their site.
Limitations
Gemini, Claude and Google AI Mode sit on Enterprise only. Sampling depth was not found on the reviewed page.
What to verify
Request a sample of stored answers and confirm the countries and languages your plan covers.
Verdict: Useful when monitoring and site fixes belong to the same technical team.
6. Otterly.ai: best for small budgets
Otterly.ai publishes Lite at $29 a month for 15 prompts, Standard at $189 for 100 prompts and Premium at $489 for 400 prompts. Each tracks ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot daily, with Claude, Google AI Mode and Gemini as add-ons.
Best for
Small teams and solo marketers that need core monitoring and link citation analysis at a published price.
Limitations
Execution features were not found on the reviewed page, and Gemini is sold as an add-on rather than in the base engine set.
What to verify
Confirm which engines your buyers use before comparing tier prices.
Verdict: The lowest published entry price in this review, with monitoring only.
AthenaHQ vs Profound vs Peec AI
The three are often shortlisted together, and they differ mainly in how much of the programme the tool tries to own. Peec AI is monitoring-first: clean daily tracking, three chosen models on self-serve plans and ranked actions. AthenaHQ adds a recommendation engine and a content optimization agent on a published $295 Starter plan with 11 models. Profound adds credit-based marketing agents, all-time history and enterprise governance on custom pricing.
For a mid-sized in-house team, AthenaHQ offers the widest published model list for the price. For an agency with many client brands, Peec AI’s agency plan is the more natural fit. For a large organisation with procurement requirements, Profound’s history, exports and SSO carry more weight than list price.
AirOps vs AthenaHQ
AirOps and AthenaHQ both claim the gap between insight and action, but from opposite ends. AthenaHQ starts from monitoring and recommends fixes. AirOps starts from content workflows and adds monitoring. AirOps’ own comparison page credits AthenaHQ with CMS publishing and competitor benchmarking. It marks AthenaHQ as partial on content workflows and offsite visibility.
Choose AthenaHQ when the question is “where are we losing, and what should we fix first”. Choose AirOps when the question is “how do we ship 40 refreshed pages a month under brand governance”. A managed delivery team was not found on either reviewed page below the enterprise tier, which is where an agency such as Canlah AI fits.
How to decide between AthenaHQ and an alternative
Pick AthenaHQ if you want software that monitors 11 models and recommends fixes your team will make. Pick an alternative if the bottleneck is elsewhere.
- Choose AthenaHQ if you are an in-house team that wants broad model coverage, recommendations and GA4 or Shopify attribution at a published price.
- Choose Canlah AI if you want the fixes made by a team and every finding kept as a raw record you can re-run.
- Choose Profound if you are a large enterprise prioritising history, exports, SSO and AI agents.
- Choose AirOps if publishing throughput is the constraint and you need governed content workflows.
- Choose Peec AI if you are an agency that needs multi-brand monitoring first.
Requirement-to-tool map for the seven options in this comparison.
| Requirement | Best fit in this comparison | What to confirm before you sign |
|---|---|---|
| Managed delivery with re-verifiable evidence | Canlah AI | A dated sample probe record, and which tasks the team performs directly |
| Broad model list at a published price | AthenaHQ | Whether 3,600 Starter credits cover your prompts, engines and runs |
| Enterprise governance and AI agents | Profound | Which self-serve tier applies, and the runs behind each daily point |
| Content workflows with CMS publishing | AirOps | Task consumption per article refresh, and the Pro engine list in your contract |
| Multi-brand agency monitoring | Peec AI | Current plan prices, and how daily visibility is computed from single runs |
| AI crawler-facing site layer | Scrunch | Whether Core covers your engines, countries and languages |
| Lowest published entry price | Otterly.ai | Whether your buyers use engines that sit outside the base set |

Frequently asked questions
Is this AthenaHQ review independent?
No. Canlah AI publishes this AthenaHQ review and is one of the alternatives listed in it, so it is a vendor editorial assessment rather than an independent award. Every competitor claim here comes from a public product or pricing page reviewed on September 23, 2026, and none was checked through a paid account. Run the same prompts through your own shortlist before deciding.
Is AthenaHQ worth it?
AthenaHQ is worth shortlisting for in-house teams that want monitoring across 11 models and content recommendations for $295 a month. Its value depends on whether 3,600 credits cover your prompts, engines and runs, and whether your team has capacity to act on the recommendations.
How much does AthenaHQ cost?
On September 23, 2026, AthenaHQ listed a Free plan with 300 credits, Starter at $295 a month for 3,600 credits and custom Enterprise pricing. One credit equals one AI response, and AthenaHQ’s comparison page notes that some models cost five credits. API access and extra credits are paid add-ons on Starter.
Is AthenaHQ an agency that does GEO work for you?
No. AthenaHQ is a software platform. Its agents and recommendations suggest on-page and off-page actions, and Enterprise adds white-glove setup and a Certified GEO/SEO Specialist, but your team still owns publishing and outreach.
AthenaHQ vs Profound: which is better for enterprise?
Profound suits enterprises that need all-time history, CSV and JSON exports, an API and credit-based agents on a custom contract. AthenaHQ suits teams that want a published price and 11 models from Starter. Both list SSO and SOC 2 on their enterprise tiers.
What is the difference between AirOps and AthenaHQ?
AthenaHQ is monitoring-first and recommends fixes. AirOps is content-first, with governed workflows, brand kits and direct CMS publishing. Teams that need to publish at volume lean to AirOps, while teams that need to know where they are losing lean to AthenaHQ.
Does AthenaHQ track DeepSeek, Qwen or Doubao?
AthenaHQ lists DeepSeek on its Starter plan. Qwen and Doubao were not found on the reviewed pages, and multi-region support is an Enterprise feature. Chinese engines are not part of Canlah AI’s standard tracking either, so confirm coverage with each vendor in a live demonstration.
How is Canlah AI different from AthenaHQ?
AthenaHQ sells software that monitors and recommends. Canlah AI is an agency that monitors under a locked protocol, stores every probe as a raw record and then does the on-site and off-site work. Teams that want to operate their own dashboard should choose a platform instead.
